British duo Nick Woodbridge and Sam Weale both finished outside the medals as Czech David Svoboda won gold in the men?s modern pentathlon on Saturday. The home pair went into the final event, the combined run and shoot, in the top ten but they could not make up ground on the leaders in front of a huge crowd at Greenwich Park. Svoboda, 2010 European champion, overhauled China?s Cao Zhongrong on the final 1km run, while Adam Marosi, of Hungary, won bronze. Svoboda finished on 5,928 points to beat Cao by 24 points. Adam Marosi, the 2009 world champion, finished with 5,836 points. World No.9 Woodbridge was on top form to start with, winning his first five bouts to top the leaderboard at one stage but he tailed off and had to settle for joint-13th. Weale?s morning progressed in the opposite way to his team-mate?s, losing seven of his first nine bouts, but recovering to finish in the top half of the field. Svoboda was the leading athlete in the fencing, the Czech equalling the Olympic record with 26 victories for 1,024 points. Next up was the 200metres freestyle swim at the Aquatics Centre, one of Woodbridge?s best events, and his time of one minute 57.32 seconds moved him up to eighth place. Weale swum his fastest time of the year, 2min 3.40sec, while the event was won by Egypt?s Amro El Geziry, who broke his own Olympic record with a time of 1min 55.7sec. Woodbridge scored 1,156 points in the riding to climb to seventh, while Weale was ninth at that stage after scoring 1,176 points, the seventh best ride ? but neither could get close to the medals in the final.
