How the major US stock indexes fared Friday

The stock market traded lower almost all day Friday, then made a U-turn and ended the day slightly higher. It was the end of a quiet summer week, with low trading volume and few major developments in either the U.S. economy or the European debt crisis. Investors haven't had much conviction on whether to buy or sell.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 42.76 points, or 0.3 percent, to 13,207.95.

The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 3.07, or 0.2 percent, to 1,405.87.

The Nasdaq composite rose 2.22, or 0.1 percent, to 3,020.86.

For the week:

The Dow is up 111.78 points, or 0.9 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 14.88, or 1.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 52.96, or 1.8 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 990.39 points, or 8.1 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 148.27, or 11.8 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 415.71, or 16 percent.
