Smoak HRs twice, M's crush Rangers 21-8

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:14 a.m. ET May 31, 2012

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Justin Smoak and the Seattle Mariners made everyone forget they're one of the worst hitting teams in baseball.

Smoak hit two three-run homers against his former team and the Mariners used a pair of early eight-run innings to rout the Texas Rangers for the second straight game, winning 21-8 Wednesday night.

Smoak had three hits to go with his career high for RBIs as Seattle reached double digits for runs in back-to-back games against the AL West leaders. Jesus Montero homered among his three hits and drove in four runs and Kyle Seager had four hits and two RBIs. Every Seattle starter had at least one hit in amassing 20 hits.

Dustin Ackley also had a three-run homer in support of former Rangers minor league prospect Blake Beavan (3-4).

"We were hitting with a lot of confidence up there tonight," said Seager, the best hitter in the Mariners' lineup at .265 with All-Star Ichiro Suzuki given a rest day.

The Mariners came in hitting .229, 13th of 14 in the American League.

"Hitting is contagious. We kind of got on a little roll there and everybody was feeling good, real relaxed and everything. It was just one of those days."

Rangers starter Derek Holland (4-4) gave up eight hits, eight runs and two walks in 1 2-3 innings Seattle had lost five in a row before beating Texas 10-3 Tuesday night. They scored eight runs in the second and third innings en rout to scoring the second-most runs in club history, equaling a 21-9 victory against the Los Angeles Angels on Sept. 30, 2000.

Coincidentally, that was the same day the Rangers gave up the most runs in club history, a 23-2 loss at Oakland.

The Mariners started the game with only one player hitting better than .250 in the lineup. No matter, they sent 27 batters to the plate in the second and third innings, scoring 16 runs on 15 hits - tying their season high for a game - including three home runs.

The 21 runs are the most scored in the majors this season, topping the Rangers and Rockies, who have each scored 18 runs.

"Obviously these guys really put it together here the last couple of nights," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "You're seeing a lot of what we've been talking about in regard to potential with these young players."

Holland got off to a quick start, retiring the top of the first in order, including strikeouts of Chone Figgins and Seager.

The Mariners found their groove in the second, sending 13 batters to the plate. Ackley and Montero each homered and accounted for five RBIs, all with two outs, in the inning.

Miguel Olivo had two RBIs in the inning, and Seager had one.

Only Michael Saunders did not reach safely in the inning, though he made up for that with a double and a run scored to start the Mariners' eight-run third inning.

Montero had two more RBIs and Smoak added a three-run home run.

The Rangers needed 97 pitches to retire six hitters.

Holland, who was 6-1 in seven career starts against Seattle, including 4-0 with a 2.70 ERA since the start of last season, threw 41 pitches in the second inning before being relieved by Yoshinori Tateyama.

Tateyama got the final out of the second, but recorded only one out in the third, giving up seven hits and six earned runs.

"It's really upsetting to have something like that happen to you when you've been working so hard," said Holland, who threw 41 pitches in the second inning after a breezing through the first in 10.

"I did not give my team a chance to win," he said. "It's a big letdown on my part."

The Mariners added four more in the eighth. Ackley reached and scored on Seager's double, his fourth hit, and Montero walked for the second time before Smoak hit his second home run.

The Rangers tried to make a game of it, sending nine men to the plate in scoring five runs in the sixth. Texas added two in the seventh.

"I wish I wouldn't have given up a couple of those runs that last inning," said Beavan, who gave up five runs on eight hits with no walks and two strikeouts in six innings.

"But that's how it goes when you just go after guys and you're throwing majority fastballs and you've got a lead like that," Beavan added.

Outfielder Josh Hamilton, who was back in the lineup after missing the previous two games with a respiratory illness, was 2 for 4 with two doubles, one a run-scoring hit that increased his major league-leading RBI total to 57.

"We just couldn't get anybody out in those two innings," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "Guys swung the bat over there tonight.

"We've got to live with it and move on," he said. "That's all we can do."

NOTES: Hamilton has hit safely in 40 of 47 games this season. Rangers manager Ron Washington gave shortstop Elvis Andrus the night off. Andrus acknowledged the time off was a mental break after he committed an error on Tuesday. Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo threw out the ceremonial first pitch - high but across the plate - caught by Rangers reliever Mike Adams, a Cowboys season-ticket holder.

El Chanclaso: Colorado Rep. Mike Coffman Gets A Chanclaso

Chanclaso

The latest Congressman to go the?birther route?is Colorado Rep. Mike Coffman, who was caught on tape declaring that he was unsure whether President Obama was born in the US.? Furthermore, Rep. Coffman said he was certain that in President Obama's heart he was not American. Imagine that. Rep. Coffman has no idea whether President Obama is a US citizen -?a simple Google search?could help him there - but he purports to know what's in the President's heart.? Come on, give me a break.? At the least, Rep. Coffman had the decency to apologize for his dim-witted views. ?Once again, how can the American people expect Congress to function properly when so many (62 to be in fact) Congressional members are refusing to believe in facts, and instead rely on rumors and hearsay. I'm sending Rep. Coffman a?chanclaso.

Aplauso

Un aplauso to Disney and Pixar who have announced they will be releasing a movie based on the Mexican holiday?D?a de los Muertos.?No release date or any plot details have been revealed but I'm looking forward to this movie.??D?a de los Muertos?is one of my favorite holidays and I'm hoping Disney and Pixar do right by that film.

I also want to send some aplausos to the Oregon State Board of Education for banning the use of Native American mascots.? In a 5-1 decision, the Board is requiring 15 schools to change their mascots by 2017.? They're serious too. If the schools fail to change their mascots, they risk losing state funding. If people in Native American communities find these images offensive then we should change those images. The NFL's Washington Redskins could easily be changed to the Washington Monuments or the Washington Red & Blue Stripes.? Adelante Oreg?n!

Mad Men, Season 5

One last note about Peggy. Patrick, you point out that like Joan, she?s been bought, for $19,000 and dinner at La Caravelle. But if you watch the scene, the moment that truly wins her over is when Chaough praises her work, finding in it, and in her earnest, direct approach to the business, something of value. It?s this recognition?of her particular gift as a copywriter?that she?s been starving for. I bet she would have left for much less.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Researchers looking into the value of adapted yoga for stroke rehabilitation report that after an eight-week program, study participants demonstrated improved balance and flexibility, a stronger and faster gait, and increased strength and endurance.

The study, involving researchers from the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and IU Bloomington, exposed older veterans recovering from stroke to yoga. The men and women had completed their post-stroke occupational and physical therapy before the study but continued to have impairments.

The findings from two new analyses of the study will be presented on Wednesday during the annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine in San Francisco.

Arlene Schmid, rehabilitation research scientist at the Roudebush VA Medical Center and principle investigator of the VA-funded study, said loss of functional strength, flexibility and endurance is common after a stroke, which can lead to long-term disability. She said 5 million Americans are living with the consequences of stroke, which can alter patients' lifestyles through decreased independence in activities of daily living, limited mobility and reduced participation in society.

"Clinicians need methods to manage and improve these post-stroke physical impairments," said Schmid, also an assistant professor of occupational therapy in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at IUPUI.

Her analysis, "Physical Improvements After Yoga for People With Chronic Stroke," examined gains in functional strength, flexibility and endurance as a result of the yoga and found significant improvements in all areas. The yoga activities, she said in her report, might have "improved neuromuscular control, likely allowing for strength improvements in affected limbs, sides or areas of disuse."

Tracy Dierks, associate professor of physical therapy in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, focused his analysis of study findings on how well study participants could walk after the program.

In "The Effect of Balance Exercise Therapy on Gait Parameters in Individuals With Chronic Stroke," he reports that after the yoga program, the study participants showed improved balance and faster gait speeds with longer steps or strides. But, while the veterans could walk faster, they were unable to sustain this faster speed for the duration of the six-minute test.

"The gait findings from our study have the potential to greatly impact clinical practice for gait recovery," Dierks said. "The yoga intervention was designed to improve balance, not gait; we did not focus on improving gait at all. Yet we saw major improvements in most clinical gait measurements. But one often overlooked deficit remained: the inability to sustain gait speed for endurance."

Schmid concluded in her presentation that it might be appropriate to include yoga in the in-patient or out-patient rehabilitation people receive after a stroke. Such a class should be taught by a yoga therapist who has had additional training in anatomy and physiology and how to work with people with disabilities.

Dierks is discussing his findings at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, during the gait session. Co-authors are Peter A. Altenburger, IUPUI, and Schmid and Kristine K. Miller, Roudebush VA Medical Center.

Schmid is discussing her findings at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, during the session on cardiovascular system, cardiovascular disease management, children and the elderly. Co-authors are Miller, Linda S. Williams, Erin DeBaun and Teresa Damush, IUPUI/Roudebush VA Medical Center; Marieke Van Puymbroeck, IU Bloomington; Dierks and Altenburger, IUPUI; and Nancy Schalk, Heartland Yoga.

Report: Russian intelligence suspects US hand in SuperJet crash

While most Russian aviation experts contacted today dismissed the sabotage theory, they say there is a deepening mystery about how Russia's most modern civil aircraft, with all its systems apparently functioning perfectly, came to slam into the side of a mile-high volcano during a routine demonstration flight.

"All the theories put forward so far are badly flawed, there is a shortage of hard information and there are a lot of irresponsible rumors," says Roman Gusarov, editor of Avia.ru, an online aviation journal. "I am afraid that Russia is not going to emerge from this story without taking a black eye."

Citing an unnamed GRU general, Komsomolskaya Pravda?claimed that electronic jamming of the plane's on board equipment is the most plausible explanation for how the jet, which was making a demonstration flight out of Jakarta airport with 45 people aboard, smashed into a mountainside even though an initial investigation has found that its terrain and collision avoidance systems were all functioning properly.

"We are investigating the theory that it was industrial sabotage," the GRU officer is quoted as saying. He said that Russian intelligence has long monitored the activities of US military electronic specialists at the Jakarta airport.

"We know that they have special equipment that can cut communications between an aircraft and the ground or interfere with the parameters on board," he said. "For example, the plane is flying at one altitude, but after interference from the ground onboard equipment shows another."

The investigation has so far turned up the plane's "black box" cockpit voice recorder, which shows that no system-failure alarms went off during the plane's final minutes, nor did the crew take any audible emergency action. But the aircraft's digital flight recorder, which monitors flight systems and engine performance, remains missing in the rough jungle terrain around Mount Salak, where at least seven other deadly air disasters have occurred.

Big questions

The biggest question about the crash is why the SuperJet's pilot,?Alexander Yablontsev, one of Russia's most experienced test pilots, requested permission to descend amid a rainstorm in a notoriously mountainous area ? and why a ground controller in Jakarta granted that permission.

"Maybe he didn't see that the plane was heading straight at the mountain. On the other hand, we don't rule out the possibility that this was deliberate industrial sabotage to drive our aircraft from the market," an unnamed official at Sukhoi, the plane's manufacturer, told Komsomolskaya Pravda. "Fortunately, we don't foresee any loss of orders [for the SuperJet]."

I'm Not Needy, But My Relationship Is | The Hand

Posted by The Hand on May 30, 2012 in Relationships |

Recently I was faced with a basic quandary about myself as a person. Am I needy? No, I?m not going to share the situation that brought about this little discussion. The fact is that it?s here and while it?s easy to dismiss the idea right away, I find it more interesting to take some time and think about it.

Neediness is a pretty common characteristic attributed to females, especially when they?re in a relationship that often involves emotional attachment. Being ?needy? is another one of those dismissals that guys like to use when they?re talking about ?crazy womenz and their crazy feelingz.? Basically, demanding any time or effort above what your partner initially wanted to give you gets classified as ?needy.?

When I think about a person that I would deem needy, it normally involves an individual with relatively low self-esteem who is looking for constant affirmations that the people in their lives still love and care for them. It?s someone who has to end every conversation with ?I love you? and freaks out if a text message goes unanswered for more than a couple minutes. Personally, I?ve never considered myself to be a part of that group.

But as a happily married woman, I have to admit that I find myself missing a lot of the romance that comes early on in relationships. Suddenly I was looking for more date nights, more ?I love you.? I want reminders that we?re still just as in love and committed now as we were years ago when we decided to get married. That desire for romance brought up an uncomfortable question. Am I needy? Did I suddenly become one of those people? Had I judged them wrong to begin with?

In this moment, it would super easy to blame romantic comedies and Jane Austen novels. Of course books and movies only show romance when it?s being screamed from a rooftop or shoved in our face. I grew up seeing that you didn?t really love someone until you embarrassed yourself in front of a crowded room for them. I could use the excuse that the early exposure to in-your-face romance makes me perpetually inclined to grand romantic gestures.

I could use that as an excuse, but it wouldn?t be completely fair. When my husband and I are dating, you want to know the most romantic thing he ever said to me? I can remember it very vividly. We were talking about the possibility of my taking a little time off work to go back to school. He told me that he would fine supporting me for a while when I wasn?t earning an income. My response, as an independent single mother, was that ?I don?t need you take care of me.? Without a moment?s pause he said, ?And that?s the only reason I would want to.? That?s the day I decided that I would marry that man.

Sure, it?s a cute story, but it?s not a romantic comedy story. There was no neediness there. There was no flash mob apology or interrupting my sister?s wedding to proclaim our love. It was a simple moment while we were cleaning the kitchen after dinner. My dating life had very little resemblance to a Jane Austen novel, so why would my marriage be any different?

I think I?m beginning to realize that relationships in general have to be a little needy. The longer they go on, the more they need to attract attention. The longer you?re with someone, the more work they take. (Coincidentally, the more work they take, they more rewarding they are.)It?s not just insecure people that are begging someone to love them. Long-term commitment takes dedication. It takes effort that we sometimes aren?t in the mood to put in. That doesn?t make our partners needy, it simply means that a good relationship will take energy from both parties to keep it healthy and happy.

Sure, some people are looking for relationships that are a little more labor-intensive than others. That?s probably why I felt sympathy for those who seemed to need more affirmation than their partners were willing to put out. It seemed like they hadn?t found someone whose romantic relationship needs matched their own. But even in the most low-key relationships, there will be time where our partners demand more effort than we?re in the mood to give. And those moments will feel a little needy.

Am I needy? Possibly. I like to feel like I?m pretty secure in my own skin, but there are times when I want to hear that I?m smart or capable or funny. But is my relationship needy? Yes. By it?s very nature, marriage demands commitment from us. That takes effort. And sometimes, it takes more effort than either my husband or I are in the mood to devote to it.

No, that?s not the most rosy or romantic view on marriage you?ll find, but I think it?s an honest one. It?s also one that lots of couples probably face over time. The good news is that putting the effort in to help keep our relationships strong normally involves some fun and a little lovin.

Report: U.S is trying to convince Russia to remove Syrian President Bashar Alassad and to keep his government

May 27, 2012 ? Middle East Post

pb-120326-obama-medvedev-ps.photoblog900

New York Times reported today that U.S President Obama is making an effort to remove Bashar Alassad while his government stays in its place for a period. The suggested plan is similar to the model that was used in Yemen where former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh left the chair command and his deputy took control.

The U.S suggested plans includes reaching an agreement with the opposition in Syria that would allow elections later and put an end for the Syrian President Bashar control of the country. The plan?s success depends on Russia?s cooperation and agreement on it since the latter has blocked any UN Security Council action against Al-Assad until now.

Russia refused any military action against Syria and considers it a main ally in the region. Not only that, but the Russian leadership have stated several times that it will not allow an end for the Syrian President that is similar to what happened to former Libyan President Muammar Qaddafi.

In the G8 meeting President Obama suggested the plan to Russian Prime Minister Medvedev that did not seem to refuse it. However, a Russian agreement on such a plan is not easy to get especially that Syria is Moscow?s main Middle East ally and is used for the Russian naval bases.

Tropical Storm Beryl makes landfall on Fla. coast

Tropical Storm Beryl has made landfall in northeastern Florida, bringing drenching rains and driving winds to the southeastern U.S. coast, forecasters said.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami reported that the center of Beryl made landfall near Jacksonville Beach at around 12:10 a.m., with near-hurricane-strength winds of 70 mph (113 kph). The hurricane center reported late Sunday that the weather system was in the process of making landfall.

"There are strong rain bands that are rotating around the center of the storm..." forecaster Al Sandrik said in an audio statement on the NHC website.

The weather system is expected to continue dumping rain over parts of Florida and Georgia on Monday. It is expected to weaken as it moves inland and become a tropical depression by Monday night, and then moves out to sea.

Tropical storm warnings were in effect for the entire Georgia coastline, as well as parts of Florida and South Carolina.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott urged Florida residents in the affected areas to "stay alert and aware."

"Tropical Storm Beryl is expected to bring heavy rain and winds, and it is vital to continue to monitor local news reports and listen to the advice of local emergency management officials," Scott said in a statement early Sunday evening.

Beryl was expected to bring 4 to 8 inches of rain to parts, with some areas getting as much as 12 inches. Forecasters predict the storm surge and tide will cause significant coastal flooding in northeastern Florida, Georgia and southern South Carolina.

The weather system could complicate holiday traffic on Monday. It wrecked some Memorial Day weekend plans on Sunday, causing shoreline campers to pack up and head inland and leading to the cancellation of some events.

Campers at Cumberland Island, Ga., which is reachable only by boat, were told to leave by 4:45 p.m. Sunday. The island has a number of undeveloped beaches and forests popular with campers.

However, many people seemed determined to make the best of the soggy forecast.

At Greyfield Inn, a 19th-century mansion and the only private inn on Cumberland Island, the rooms were nearly full Sunday and everyone was planning to stay put through the wet weather, said Dawn Drake, who answered the phone at the inn's office on the Florida coast.

In Jacksonville, Fla., Sunday's jazz festival and Memorial Day ceremony were canceled. Workers were also out clearing tree limbs and debris that could be tossed about by the storm's winds. Winds had already knocked down tree limbs and power lines in parts of coastal Georgia, leaving hundreds without electricity.

But business was booming at the Red Dog Surf Shop in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., where customers flocked to buy boards and wax in anticipation of the storm's high waves. Officials along the coast warned of rip currents, waves and high tides ? all of which can be dangerous but also tend to attract adventurous surfers. The waters had already become dangerous in South Carolina, where rescuers were searching for a missing swimmer.

The Coast Guard said three people and a dog were rescued from a sinking recreational vehicle by crews in Charleston Harbor late Sunday morning.

"There were wave heights of roughly four feet, the waves started depositing water in the boat and the boat started to get overwhelmed, it started to sink," Petty Officer Christopher Evanson, a Coast Guard spokesman, told the Associated Press. "The Coast Guard was able to get on scene, get alongside the boat and disembark the passengers.

Evanson said the Guard is "trying to convince boaters and swimmers alike to stay away from the water. It's very dangerous right now and we're trying to stay vigilant and we're out there trying to ensure that everybody is safe.

In Jacksonville Beach, Fernando Sola said business was booming at his Happy Faces Ice Cream truck. A bus- full of tourists from South Carolina had stopped to buy some ice cream and watch the storm waters churn.

"There are actually more people than on a normal day. It's working out great," said Sola, taking a few moments away from scooping ice cream to people lined up in front of his truck.

Steady, heavy winds kicked up sand across the area, forcing onlookers to shield themselves with towels.

Jessica Smith and Chester Jaheeb decided to brave the waters despite many warnings for people to stay out. Jaheeb, who was born in India but lives in Jacksonville, said he had never experienced a tropical storm before.

"We were at a certain part that started pulling us out, like the rip current, so we decided to come to shore," said Smith, 17.

Taylor Anderson, captain of Jacksonville Beach's American Red Cross Volunteer Lifesaving Corps., said his lifeguards went body-surfing early Sunday to get acclimated with the surf conditions for what looked to be a long day. They also reviewed methods to determine where there might be riptides.

"They look for discoloration, the water moving paradoxically back to sea, and our lifeguards are trained to spot that, to keep people away from that, especially when the surf is this high. It makes those run-outs very dangerous. People can get sucked into those very fast, especially with the high surf and the high wind," he said.

Though the weather was calm earlier Sunday, Anderson's lifeguards began preparing other equipment in the morning. They packed sandbags in front of the entrances to the oceanfront Red Cross lifeguard station and pulled lifeguard stands off the beach.

As the winds picked up, officials hung two red flags, one warning of dangerous ocean conditions and the other notifying beachgoers that swimming was prohibited. But a lot of people ignored the warnings. By 3:30 p.m., Anderson said, lifeguards had made 150 "preventions," meaning lifeguards ordered 150 people out of the water, though no rescues were necessary.

One of the people ordered out the water was Christian Siciliano, 14, of Jacksonville Beach. The surfer said the waves were too rough for surfing so he, his brother and a friend decided to go boogey-boarding.

"We just went out to, like, mess around," Christian said. "It was really rough. I didn't make it out too far, about 10 feet."

He said the waves were so powerful it was difficult to paddle against them. Then lifeguards raced to the area and ordered him and the two other youths from the water.

Bars and restaurants along Jacksonville Beach's oceanside roads were enjoying booming business, with outside decks crowded with people listening to music, drinking and watching the weather. At Joe's Crab Shack, which has a deck facing the Atlantic Ocean, the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive" blasted from outside speakers.

Joe Murphy, a spokesman for the Ritz Carlton in Amelia Island, Fla., said he was not seeing a flood of checkouts or people trying to get off the island. Outdoor dining had been moved inside and the hotel set up movies and family game activities, but the hotel had no plans to board up or move patio furniture inside.

The southeastern U.S. wasn't the only part of the country dealing with troublesome weather.

In Washington, the annual Memorial Day concert on the National Mall Sunday night was cut short as a line of thunderstorms approached the District of Columbia from the northwest. Mike Musher of the National Weather Service said the thunderstorms developed over Pennsylvania as part of the weather system that created record high temperatures in the Midwest over the weekend.

On Tybee Island, a barrier island not far from Savannah, water off the beaches was closed for swimming Sunday. Tybee Island fire Chief C.L. Sasser said winds of up to 42 mph were creating "horrendous water currents." Only people with flotation devices strapped or tethered to their bodies were being allowed into the water, and they were being cautioned not to venture in farther than knee deep.

"Even if you're standing in waist-deep water, the current can sweep you out quickly," he said.

His ocean rescue team pulled a total of 48 people from the water on Saturday, he said, including about 27 that were considered to be in life-threatening conditions. One man who was sucked under the water was rescued by friends and onlookers and was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

A band of showers soaked the beaches late Sunday morning, causing crowds to thin, Sasser said. With alternating rainy and sunny weather forecast throughout the day, he said he expected the crowds on the sands to ebb and flow.

In South Carolina, Janice Keith with the Myrtle Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau said Sunday that the office hadn't fielded any calls from concerned tourists.

In Beaufort County, emergency management deputy director David Zeoli said officials were continuing to monitor the storm and encourage people to have a plan in case conditions get worse.

Zeoli said winds had kicked up in the area that includes Hilton Head Island, a popular golf and beach destination. "It's just a wet day here," he said.
