Men's basketball brings home victory against American University

The men?s basketball team earned a hard-fought win Wednesday night against American University to improve to 18-5 overall and 8-1 in the Patriot League.

Lehigh cruised to an easy 8-point lead at the half led by senior forward Gabe Knutson who had 12 points (4-4, from 3-point range). Lehigh proceeded to go on an 8-0 run to begin the 2nd half to increase their lead to 16 points with just over 17 minutes remaining in the game. Yet, stellar 3-point shooting and tough defense produced a 15-5 run for American University.

Led by senior forward Stephen Lumpkins, the Eagles narrowed the gap to a mere 6 points with 11 minutes remaining and continued their run to tie the game up at 43 from two 3-pointers that were capped off by senior forward Mike Bersch.

After a timeout by head coach Brett Reed, Lehigh quickly regained its composure, led by heady plays from junior guard Anthony D?Orazio who answered with a swift drive that resulted in two made free throws. Knutson?s gutsy, physical play and aggressive offensive rebounding also fired up the Hawks, propelling Lehigh to a 4-point lead. And Lehigh never looked back.

A combination of costly turnovers for American and strong 3-point shooting from the Mountain Hawks resulted in a deficit that seemed too great for American to handle.

Lead by a newly energized crowd, Lehigh cruised the rest of the way to a 60-47 win, ending the game on a 17-4 run. Knutson led Lehigh in scoring with 18 points while also contributing 4 rebounds in 33 minutes. D?Orazio put together a strong performance finishing 15 points, 2 assists, 2 steals, 3 rebounds and a block.

This win boosted Lehigh to 9-1 in its last 10 games, and extended Hawks? winning streak to 4 games. With the loss, American University dropped to 9-15 overall, and 4-5 in the Patriot League.

The team battles the Bucknell University Bison for Patriot League dominance Feb. 18 at Stabler Arena.
