Child killed, two wounded, in Minnesota shooting

(Reuters) - A 33-year-old gunman faced criminal charges in Minnesota on Tuesday after killing a 10-year-old child and wounding two other people when he opened fire on motorists in a St. Paul suburb, authorities said.

Police in the town of Oakdale said the assailant, whose name was not immediately released, had fired two bursts of bullets at passing vehicles from a handgun before he was taken into custody on Monday evening.

"Initially it looks like a random shooting," Captain Jack Kettler of the Oakdale Police told local NBC news affiliate KARE 11 TV.

"The individual was shooting at passing vehicles," Kettler added. "We have no indication anybody else was involved in this."

The shooting came as U.S. President Barack Obama was expected to reiterate his recent calls for a crackdown on gun violence when he gives his State of the Union address on Tuesday evening.
