We?ve gathered the best of Slate?s 2012 longreads below, on everything from the crisis in American walking to the rise and fall of Prog rock. Perfect for long flights and traffic-clogged car rides!

?Where?s _why? What happened when one of the world?s most unusual, and beloved, computer programmers disappeared,? by Annie Lowrey. As Lowrey challenges herself to learn computer programming, she stumbles onto the case of a ?Ruby on Rails,? a coding whiz who mysteriously vanished in 2009.

?The Chickens and the Bulls: The rise and incredible fall of a vicious extortion ring that preyed on prominent gay men in the 1960s,? by William McGowan. When the FBI and the NYPD uncovered a network of blackmailers shaking down gay targets in 1965, they did something unexpected. Rather than shrugging, or arresting the victims, they worked their way into the ring and broke it open, using, for the first time, the resources of law enforcement to defend the rights of persecuted gay men.

?The Crisis in American Walking: How we got off the pedestrian path,? by Tom Vanderbilt. What strolls on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening? Not man, anymore, says Vanderbilt, digging into the strange and unsettling decline of on-foot ambulation in the United States. His four-part series explores reasons for the drop-off, pedestrian walking habits, urban ?walkability? scores, and strategies for getting America back to bipedalism.

?The Wedding: Will and Erwynn met at church and fell in love. But they had a big problem??don?t ask, don?t tell.? The unlikely story of the first gay military union,? by Katherine Goldstein. Goldstein follows two men in the armed forces down the winding road to marriage, just nine months after the repeal of the ban on openly gay soldiers.

?Georgia?s Hunger Games: Fewer than 4,000 adults in the southern state receive welfare, even as poverty is soaring. How Georgia declared war on its poorest citizens?leaving them to fight for themselves,? by Neil deMause. Rising poverty rates, plunging welfare rolls, and a state government that sees financial aid as a gladiatorial contest: The dystopian reality in Georgia could have risen from the pages of a Suzanne Collins novel. Combining grim statistics and face-to-face conversations with poor Americans, deMause argues for a policy overhaul. ?

?The Conversion: How, when, and why Mitt Romney changed his mind on abortion,? by William Saletan. Saletan follows the candidate?s fluctuating attitude on abortion from pro-choice to pro-life?and explains the significance of the shift.

?Prog Spring: The brief rise and inevitable fall of the world?s most hated pop music,? by David Weigel. Weigel explores the overstuffed, visionary madness of progressive (?prog?) rock.

?How To Measure for a President,? by John Dickerson. What does it take to be an effective commander (and everything else)-in-chief? Dickerson proposes a checklist of traits?note the absence of leadership?we should look for whenever we evaluate candidates for the highest office in the land.

?The Case of the Mormon Historian: What happened when Michael Quinn challenged the history of the church he loved,? by David Haglund. Faith and intellectual inquiry don?t always go hand-in-hand, especially when that (Mormon) hand wants to chronicle the ?problem areas? of the LDS past. In his study of historian Michael Quinn, Haglund paints a moving portrait of a man torn between loyalty to his church and hunger for the truth. ??

?Free To Be: Forty years ago this fall, a bunch of feminists released an album. They wanted to change ? everything,? by Dan Kois. In 1972, one record revolutionized the way a generation of kids?and their parents?thought about gender. Interlacing the history of Free To Be You and Me with anecdotes from his own life as a father, Kois explains why the oddball hippie album still matters in 2012.

Snowstorm disrupts hundreds of Northeast flights

As a storm system moves into New England, it's expected that parts of Boston and New York state will see pockets of snow, with rain expected from Cape Cod to Washington, D.C. TODAY's Dylan Dreyer reports.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

Several hundred flights were canceled and several thousand delayed by midday Saturday as a storm moved into the Northeast that's expected to dump several inches of snow on big cities and up to a foot in other areas.

Most of the flight disruptions were at the Boston and New York area airports, according to the tracker service FlightStats.com. By 4:25 p.m. ET, it had counted 446 flights canceled so far Saturday across the country, and nearly 5,600 delayed.

New York City could see 3 to 5 inches, as well as hazardous driving conditions from the short-lived storm, NBCNewYork.com reported.

The brunt of the storm was likely to hit southern New England, according to NBC meteorologist Dylan Dreyer. "It's from Boston back into Rhode Island where we'll see the heaviest of the snow," she said on TODAY.

Weather Channel meteorologist Mike Seidel, speaking on MSNBC, called the storm a "quick hitter" that nonetheless was having an impact on air travel before it clears out Saturday night.

The Weather Channel's Mike Seidel has more on what residents in the Northeast can expect to see as a winter weather system moves through the region.

Americans may be evacuated from African capital

Reuters

Hundreds protest in front of the French Embassy in the Bangui, Central African Republic, on Wednesday, expressing anger over the lack of response by the former colonial power to rebels advancing on the capital.

By NBC News and wire services

The United States military was preparing Thursday for a possible evacuation of American citizens from the Central African Republic as?rebel forces?advanced on the capital, Bangui, a senior defense official told NBC News.

Insurgents on motorbikes and in pickup trucks have driven to within 45 miles of Bangui after weeks of fighting, threatening to end President Francois Bozize's nearly 10-year rule over the turbulent, resource-rich country.

Bozize appealed to the United States and France to help push back the rebels.

Some U.S. Special Forces are operating in the country, trying to track down the Lords Resistance Army, a rebel group responsible for killing thousands of civilians across four African nations.?There was no indication that these forces would be used to aid Bozize against the advancing insurgents.

There are?"several hundred" civilians, including Americans and citizens from close U.S. allies in the Central African Republic who may be moved out of harm's way, the defense official said, but the State Department had not yet made the final call for evacuation.

Paris said its troops were only ready to protect French nationals.

Some 1,200 French nationals live in the CAR, mostly in the capital, according to the French Foreign Ministry, where they typically work for mining firms or aid groups.

The contingency plans were emerging as regional African leaders tried to broker a ceasefire deal and as rebels said they had temporarily halted their advance on Bangui to allow talks to take place.

The rebel advance has highlighted the instability of a country that has remained poor since independence from Paris in 1960 despite rich deposits of uranium, gold and diamonds. Average income is barely over $2 a day.

French nuclear energy group Areva mines the Bakouma uranium deposit in the CAR's south ? France's biggest commercial interest in its former colony.?

Bozize on Thursday appealed for French and U.S. military support to stop the SELEKA rebel coalition, which has promised to overthrow him unless he implements a previous peace deal in full.

France: 'Those days are over'
He told a crowd of anti-rebel protesters in the riverside capital that he had asked Paris and Washington to help move the rebels away from the capital to clear the way for peace talks which regional leaders say could be held soon in Libreville, Gabon.

"We are asking our cousins the French and the United States, which are major powers, to help us push back the rebels to their initial positions in a way that will permit talks in Libreville to resolve this crisis," Bozize said.

Central African Republic President Francois Bozize in 2008.

France has 250 soldiers in its landlocked former colony as part of a peacekeeping mission and Paris in the past has ousted or propped up governments ? including by using air strikes to defend Bozize against rebels in 2006.

But French President Francois Hollande poured cold water on the latest request for help.

"If we have a presence, it's not to protect a regime, it's to protect our nationals and our interests and in no way to intervene in the internal business of a country, in this case the Central African Republic," Hollande said on the sidelines of a visit to a wholesale food market outside Paris.

"Those days are over," he said.

Officials from around central Africa were to meet in Bangui later on Thursday to open initial talks with the government and rebels.

A rebel spokesman said fighters had temporarily halted their advance to allow dialogue.

"We will not enter Bangui," Col. Djouma Narkoyo, the rebel spokesman, told Reuters by telephone.

Previous rebel promises to stop advancing have been broken, and a diplomatic source said rebels had taken up positions around Bangui on Thursday, effectively surrounding it.

The atmosphere remained tense in Bangui the day after anti-rebel protests broke out, and residents were stocking up on food and water.

Government soldiers deployed at strategic sites and French troops reinforced security at the French embassy after protesters threw rocks at the building on Wednesday.

Bozize came to power in a 2003 rebellion that overthrew President Ange-Felix Patasse.

However, France is increasingly reluctant to directly intervene in conflicts in its former colonies. Since coming to power in May, Hollande has promised to end its shadowy relations with former colonies and put ties on a healthier footing.

A military source and an aid worker said the rebels had got as far as Damara, 47 miles from Bangui, by late afternoon on Wednesday, having skirted Sibut, where some 150 Chadian soldiers had earlier been deployed to try and block a push south by a rebel coalition.

With a government that holds little sway outside the capital, some parts of the country have long endured the consequences of conflicts in troubled neighbors Chad, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo spilling over.

Will the Senate pass the $60 billion Sandy recovery bill?

In the midst of debt and deficit negotiations in Washington, politicians are carefully considering all aspects of the proposed billion-dollar superstorm Sandy recovery bill.

By David Lawder,?Reuters / December 17, 2012

Billionaire investment banker Kenneth Lngone, (l.), listens as New York's Gov. Cuomo speak during a news conference, following a meeting of elected officials, business and labor leaders Dec. 14. Cuomo said Friday that New York has helped out other states after disasters so it's time for the federal government to step up and help New York following superstorm Sandy.

The U.S.?Senate?on Monday began debating a $60.4 billion aid bill to rebuild communities devastated by Superstorm Sandy amid criticism by conservative groups who said the measure was loaded with wasteful, non-disaster spending.

The Democratic-controlled?Senate?is looking to pass the disaster aid bill this week. But Republicans, wary of its huge price tag in the midst of tense debt and deficit negotiations in Washington, are likely to try to ratchet back some of its provisions through amendments.

Meanwhile, the?House of Representatives?is taking a slower, more painstaking approach to analyzing the Obama administration's request for funding to rebuild coastal communities largely in?New York?and?New Jersey, repair transportation infrastructure there and provide other aid.

The?House Appropriations Committee?Chairman Hal Rogers, a?Kentucky?Republican, hopes to move an aid measure before year-end but has been considering a smaller initial bill aimed at meeting immediate disaster needs.

The conservative?Club for Growth?urged senators to vote against the Sandy relief bill, saying that it contained a lot of "immaterial" spending.

"When a natural disaster occurs, there is a textbook response by?Congress?- they cobble together an overpriced bill that isn't paid for, there's no accountability or oversight, and it's filled with pork. This proposal is no different," the group said in an email to senators.

A way to reduce electrons' effective mass to nearly 0

Wednesday, December 19, 2012

The field of metamaterials involves augmenting materials with specially designed patterns, enabling those materials to manipulate electromagnetic waves and fields in previously impossible ways. Now, researchers from the University of Pennsylvania have come up with a theory for moving this phenomenon onto the quantum scale, laying out blueprints for materials where electrons have nearly zero effective mass.

Such materials could make for faster circuits with novel properties.

The work was conducted by Nader Engheta, the H. Nedwill Ramsey Professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering in Penn's School of Engineering and Applied Science, and Mario G. Silveirinha, who was a visiting scholar at the Engineering School when their collaboration began. He is currently an associate professor at the University of Coimbra, Portugal.

Their paper was published in the journal Physical Review B: Rapid Communications.

Their idea was born out of the similarities and analogies between the mathematics that govern electromagnetic waves ? Maxwell's Equations ? and those that govern the quantum mechanics of electrons ? Schr?dinger's Equations.

On the electromagnetic side, inspiration came from work the two researchers had done on metamaterials that manipulate permittivity, a trait of materials related to their reaction to electric fields. They theorized that, by alternating between thin layers of materials with positive and negative permittivity, they could construct a bulk metamaterial with an effective permittivity at or near zero. Critically, this property is only achieved when an electromagnetic wave passes through the layers head on, against the grain of the stack. This directional dependence, known as anisotropy, has practical applications.

The researchers saw parallels between this phenomenon and the electron transport behavior demonstrated in Leo Esaki's Nobel Prize-winning work on superlattices in the 1970s: semiconductors constructed out of alternating layers of materials, much like the permittivity-altering metamaterial.

A semiconductor's qualities stem from the lattice-like pattern its constituent atoms are arranged in; an electron must navigate the electric potentials of all of these atoms, moving faster or slower depending on how directly it can pass by them. Esaki and his colleagues showed that, by making a superlattice out of layers of different materials, they could produce a composite material that had different electron transport properties than either of the components.

Though the actual mass of electrons is fixed, Engheta and Silveirinha thought the same principle could be applied to the effective mass of the electron. Engineers have been tailoring materials to alter the effective mass of electrons for decades; existing semiconductors that give electrons a negative effective mass were a prerequisite for the team's new theory.

"Imagine you have a ball inside a fluid," Engheta said. "You can calculate how fast the ball falls as a combination of the force of gravity and the reaction of the fluid, or you can say that the ball has an effectively different mass in the fluid than it does normally. The effective mass can even be negative, which we see in the case of a bubble. The bubble looks like it has negative mass, because it's moving against gravity, but it is really the fluid moving down around it."

Like the optical metamaterial with alternating bands of positive and negative permittivity, Engheta and Silveirinha theorized, a material with alternating bands of positive and negative effective electron mass would allow the overall structure's effective electron mass to approach zero.

And like the optical metamaterial, the electron's effective mass in this case would be anisotropic. While travelling against the grain of the alternating materials, its effective mass would be near-zero, and thus it would travel very fast. But trying to move the electron along the grain would result in a very high effective mass, making it very difficult for it to move at all. "In the direction the electrons are collimated, we see an effective mass of zero," Engheta said. "This is like what we see with graphene, where electrons have an effective mass of zero but only along its plane.

"But a plane of graphene is only one atom thick, whereas here we would see that property in a bulk material. It's essentially like the material has wires running through it, even though there is no wire surface."

As with graphene, the properties of this composite material would be dependent on structure at the smallest scale; a few stray atoms could significantly degrade the material's overall performance. A single uniform layer of atoms is ideal in both cases, and, while deposition techniques are improving, working at the scale of a few nanometers still represents a physical challenge. The team hopes to address this challenge in future studies.

"While physics prevents us from having infinite velocity, having materials that give electrons near-zero effective mass will let us move them much faster," Engheta said.

Autoimmune disease: Retraining white blood cells

Dec. 17, 2012 ? How can the immune system be reprogrammed once it goes on the attack against its own body? EPFL scientists retrained T-cells involved in type I diabetes, a common autoimmune disease. Using a modified protein, they precisely targeted the white blood cells (T-lymphocytes, or T-cells) that were attacking pancreatic cells and causing the disease. When tested on laboratory mice, the therapy eliminated all signs of the pathology. This same method could be a very promising avenue for treating multiple sclerosis as well. The scientists have just launched a start-up company, Anokion SA, on the Lausanne campus, and are planning to conduct clinical trials within the next two years.

Their discovery has been published in the journal PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Science).

To retrain the rebellious white blood cells, the researchers began with a relatively simple observation: every day, thousands of our cells die. Each time a cell bites the dust, it sends out a message to the immune system. If the death is caused by trauma, such as an inflammation, the message tends to stimulate white blood cells to become aggressive. But if the cell dies a programmed death at the end of its natural life cycle, it sends out a soothing signal.

In the human body there is a type of cell that dies off en masse, on the order of 200 billion per day -- red blood cells. Each of these programmed deaths sends a soothing message to the immune system. The scientists took advantage of this situation, and attached the pancreatic protein targeted by T-cells in type I diabetes to red blood cells.

"Our idea was that by associating the protein under attack to a soothing event, like the programmed death of red blood cells, we would reduce the intensity of the immune response," explains Jeffrey Hubbell, co-author of the study. To do this, the researchers had to do some clever bioengineering and equip the protein with a tiny, molecular scale hook, that is able to attach itself to a red blood cell. Billions of these were manufactured and then simply injected into the body.

Complete eradication of diabetes symptoms

As these billions of red blood cells died their programmed death, they released two signals: the artificially attached pancreatic protein, and the soothing signal. The association of these two elements, like Pavlov's dog, who associates the ringing of a bell with a good or bad outcome, essentially retrained the T lymphocytes to stop attacking the pancreatic cells. "It was a total success. We were able to eliminate the immune response in type I diabetes in mice," explains Hubbell.

Minimizing risks and side effects

Co-author Stephan Kontos adds that the great advantage of this approach is its extreme precision. "Our method carries very little risk and shouldn't introduce significant side effects, in the sense that we are not targeting the entire immune system, but just the specific kind of T-cells involved in the disease."

The scientists are planning to conduct clinical trials in 2014, at the earliest. To demonstrate the potential of their method, they plan to first test applications that would counteract the immune response to a drug known for its effectiveness against gout. "We chose to begin with this application before we tackled diabetes or multiple sclerosis, since we knew and were in control of all the parameters," explains Hubbell.

Currently, the researchers are also testing the potential of this method in treating multiple sclerosis. In this disease, T-cells destroy myelin cells, which form a protective sheath around nerve fibers. They are also studying the potential of their method with another kind of white blood cell, B-lymphocytes, that are involved in many other autoimmune diseases.

Wal-Mart To Sell iPhone 5, iPad As It Snubs Amazon Kindle

Wal-Mart To Sell iPhone 5, iPad As It Snubs Amazon Kindle

By Alistair Barr
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec 14 (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc said on Friday that it began selling Apple Inc's flagship iPhone 5 smartphone at a big discount in thousands of its stores.
Wal-Mart said it is selling the 16 GB Apple iPhone 5 for $127, versus an original price of $189.97. The price is valid with a two-year contract from wireless carriers Verizon, Sprint and AT&T, the retailer added.
Wal-Mart said it is also selling the 16 GB iPhone 4S and the 16 GB iPad with Retina display and WiFi at discounts.
The offers will be available for 30 days in about 3,000 of Wal-Mart's stores, which were not identified. They are not available online, according to the retailer.
Apple has focused on high-priced, premium gadgets for many years and has strictly enforced its prices with retailers and other distributors. However, a Wal-Mart spokeswoman said on Friday that the discounts were arranged with Apple.
"We worked together with them on this," the spokeswoman, Sarah Spencer, said. "They are a great partner."
Wal-Mart is pricing the iPad starting at $399, down from $499. Beginning Dec. 17 the retailer said it will throw in a $30 iTunes card.
Wal-Mart is selling the 16 GB iPhone 4S for $47, versus an original price of $89.97, it said.
Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
Wal-Mart's cooperation with Apple is a contrast to its relationship with Amazon.com Inc , the world's largest Internet retailer.
In September, Wal-Mart said it would stop selling Amazon's Kindle eReaders and tablets, placing a bet that consumers would be more interested in Apple's gadgets. This spring, Target Corp st opped selling Kindle devices.

International Business Times: What Does Jihad Mean? Dueling Ad ...

http://www.ibtimes.com/what-does-jihad-mean-dueling-ad-campaigns-fight-holy-war-semantics-938371

The controversial pro-Israel group that caused a commuter ruckus earlier this year when it posted inflammatory ads in New York City subways is at it again, only this time it has competition.

The American Freedom Defense Initiative, the group led by the anti-Muslim blogger Pamela Geller, said this week that it has purchased its largest block of advertising space yet. The New York Times reports that Geller and company have reserved space beside roughly 220 clocks in city subway stations, where the group will post ads featuring the burning twin towers next to a quote attributed to the Koran. ?Soon shall we cast terror into the hearts of the unbelievers,? the quote says.

In September, the MTA lost a battle to block the group?s previous ads, which featured Stars of David alongside the tagline, ?Support Israel. Defeat Jihad.? The ads were posted just as tempers were flaring up throughout the Middle East over the Islamophobic YouTube video ?Innocence of Muslims.? Asked at the time whether she was worried about the campaign exacerbating the situation, Geller told IBTimes, ?I will never cower before violent intimidation, and stop telling the truth because doing so is dangerous. If someone commits violence, it is his responsibility and no one else?s.?

At the time they were posted, the American Freedom Defense Initiative?s ?Defeat Jihad? ads were heavily vandalized by pro-Muslim activists. This time around, however, Geller tells the Times that the ads will hang high above subway platforms where would-be vandals would ?need a ladder? to deface them.

Meanwhile, one Muslim civil-liberties group is fighting back with a commuter campaign of its own. In a press conference Friday morning, the Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Chicago) announced that it is launching ?MyJihad,? which it calls an educational campaign to reclaim the word jihad ?from Muslim and anti-Muslim extremists alike.?

The campaign includes several bus ads featuring people of various races along with descriptions of the word jihad in different contexts. One ad features two twenty-somethings, one black and one white, with the quote, ?My Jihad is to build friendships across the isle. What?s yours??

In Arabic, jihad literally translates to ?struggle.? It is used in the Koran to refer to a religious duty of multiple definitions, including internal struggles, the struggle to build a good Muslim society and the struggle to defend Islam through military force if necessary. It?s that last meaning that has led to widespread association with jihad as meaning ?holy war.?

?Jihad is a term that has unfortunately been widely misrepresented by the actions of Muslim extremists first and foremost, and by attempts at public indoctrination coming from Islamophobes who claim that the minority extremists are right and the majority of Muslims are wrong,? said Ahmed Rehab, executive director of CAIR-Chicago, in a statement.

CAIR-Chicago?s ?MyJihad? campaign will begin with advertisements on 25 buses throughout Chicago. The group hopes to follow up with similar campaigns in New York, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Houston and Seattle. The effort was launched, in part, as a response to Geller?s ?Defeat Jihad? campaign, which arrived on Chicago buses in November. In a press release, CAIR-Chicago dubbed Geller a ?hate blogger.? Geller is known as an outspoken critic of Islam through her Atlas Shrugs blog.

CAIR has its share of critics as well. The group has long been accused of having ties to terrorist organizations, including Hamas. In a lengthy diatribe on American Thinker earlier this month, Geller suggested that CAIR ?should always be called Hamas-CAIR.?

On thing is certain, as the war over jihad heats up, the messages will become more and more visible. And commuters, like it or not, will be caught in the middle.

Hundreds pack Conn. church for vigil after rampage

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? A vigil Friday night for the victims of a school massacre in western Connecticut brought out hundreds of community members, including some parents who were struggling with mixed emotions after their own children survived the massacre.

With the church filled to capacity, hundreds spilled outside, some of them holding hands in circles and saying prayers. Others lit prayer candles and sang "Silent Night."

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy was among the speakers at the service inside the St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic church.

"Many of us today and in the coming days will rely on what we have been taught and what we believe, that there is faith for a reason," Malloy said.

The residents were gathered to mourn those killed Friday, when a man killed his mother at their home and then opened fire inside the elementary school where she taught, massacring 26 people, including 20 children, as youngsters cowered in fear to the sound of gunshots reverberating through the building and screams echoing over the intercom.

The 20-year-old killer, carrying at least two handguns, committed suicide at the school, bringing the death toll to 28, authorities said.

At the vigil, the priest said the altar holds 26 candles, all of which were lit in memory of the victims. Lyrics of the last hymn of the ceremony rang out: "I will raise him up on eagle's wings."

The parish priest, Robert Weiss, said he spent much of Friday with victims of the families but he could not give them any answers about what happened.

After receiving word of the shooting, Tracy Hoekenga said at the vigil that she was paralyzed with fear for her two boys, fourth-grader C.J. and second grader Matthew.

"I couldn't breathe. It's indescribable. For a half an hour, 45 minutes, I had no idea if my kids were OK," she said.

She said she was wrestling with many emotions as she attended the vigil.

Her son Matthew said a teacher ordered students to their cubbies and a police officer came and told them to line up and close their eyes.

"They said there could be bad staff. So we closed our eyes and we went out. When we opened our eyes, we saw a lot of broken glass and blood on the ground."

David Connors, the father of three triplets at the school, said at a vigil that his children were taken into a closet during the lockdown.

"My son said he did hear some gunshots, as many as 10," he said. "The questions are starting to come out. 'Are we safe? Is the bad guy gone?'"

Angels close to landing Hamilton?

UPDATE: Jon Paul Morosi reports that it?s a five-year deal.

UPDATE: ?We have a report that it?s a done deal. No details yet:

1:55PM: We weren?t expecting this:

Around the same time, Buster Olney said that the Angels are ?positioning themselves for a big strike in the market.?

Maybe this is just a case of the Angels trying to drive up Hamilton?s price to the Rangers? detriment. But let?s, for a moment, assume they really do want Hamilton.

If so, I guess this would mean Trout back to center, Bourjos to the bench and Vernon Wells on a slow boat to China? Assuming the ticket on the slow boat didn?t cost too much because, jeez, Vernon Wells isn?t worth it??Or, they could trade Bourjos or Mark Trumbo I suppose for pitching help.

That could put the Angels in a strong position. ?Though it is worth noting that, with respect to players they have in common (i.e. Mike Napoli and C.J. Wilson) the Rangers have done a pretty good job of out-evaluating the Angels over the past couple of years.

No matter the case, if this happens and the Angels get Hamilton, hoo-boy, the AL West gets really freakin? fun. ?As if it wasn?t already.

UPDATE: ?Sounds like it?s gonna happen:

More ice loss through snowfall on Antarctica

Dec. 12, 2012 ? Stronger snowfall increases future ice discharge from Antarctica. Global warming leads to more precipitation as warmer air holds more moisture -- hence earlier research suggested the Antarctic ice sheet might grow under climate change. Now a study published in Nature shows that a lot of the ice gain due to increased snowfall is countered by an acceleration of ice-flow to the ocean. Thus Antarctica's contribution to global sea-level rise is probably greater than hitherto estimated, the team of authors from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) concludes.

"Between 30 and 65 percent of the ice gain due to enhanced snowfall in Antarctica is countervailed by enhanced ice loss along the coastline," says lead-author Ricarda Winkelmann. For the first time, an ensemble of ice-physics simulations shows that future ice discharge is increased up to three times because of additional precipitation in Antarctica under global warming. "The effect exceeds that of surface warming as well as that of basal ice-shelf melting," Winkelmann says.

Snow piling up exerts pressure on the ice, thus it flows faster to the coast

During the last decade, the Antarctic ice-sheet has lost volume at a rate comparable to that of Greenland. "The one certainty we have about Antarctica under global warming is that snowfall will increase," Winkelmann explains. "Since surface melt might remain comparably small even under strong global warming, because Antarctica will still be a pretty chilly place, the big question is: How much more mass within the ice sheet will slowly but inexorably flow off Antarctica and contribute to sea-level rise, which is one of the major impacts of climate change."

Since snowfall on the ice masses of Antarctica takes water out of the global water cycle, the continent's net contribution to sea-level rise could be negative during the next 100 years -- this is what a number of global and regional models suggest. The new findings indicate that this effect to a large extent is offset by changes in the ice-flow dynamics. Snow piling up on the ice is heavy and hence exerts pressure -- the higher the ice the more pressure. Because additional snowfall elevates the grounded ice-sheet but less so the floating ice shelves, it flows more rapidly towards the coast of Antarctica where it eventually breaks off into icebergs and elevates sea level.

"Sea-level is rising -- that is a fact"

A number of processes are relevant for ice-loss in Antarctica, most notably to sub-shelf melting caused by warming of the surrounding ocean water. These phenomena explain the already observed contribution to sea-level rise.

"We now know that snowfall in Antarctica will not save us from sea-level rise," says second author Anders Levermann, research domain co-chair at PIK and a lead author of the sea-level change chapter of the upcoming IPCC's 5th assessment report. "Sea level is rising -- that is a fact. Now we need to understand how quickly we have to adapt our coastal infrastructure; and that depends on how much CO2 we keep emitting into the atmosphere," Levermann concludes.

My wife and I have been together almost 30 years and a month ago she told me that she didn't want to be married anymore (it was the old "I still love you but I'm not in love with you and it's not you, it's me). She said that we had grown apart and that she couldn't see spending the rest of her life with me.

A week later she admitted to having an affair that had been ongoing for six months (he lived in another city but they both traveled on business and would meet up in different cities to spend nights together). I happened to see her phone one day and found a 40 message text thread. They claimed to love each other and were definitely sexually involved. He found out that I found out who he was when I Googled him and read his profile on LinkedIn (at which time he ended the relationship with my wife because he didn't want his wife to find out). My wife was pissed at me because I looked at her phone and that he ended their affair so abruptly. She also said that the affair had nothing to do with why she wanted to end our marriage (I think perhaps it emboldened her to want to move on and enjoy life as a single woman).

We went for couples' counseling and in our second session, my wife also admitted to a one night stand several years ago (but claimed that it didn't mean anything as it was only a one night stand). When the therapist asked if she had any other intimate relationships with other guys, my wife said that she had lots of opportunities, but only did it with these two guys.

We just separated a week ago and are trying to figure things out (my wife has said that she's not sure if moving on is the right thing and that she may be making the biggest mistake of her life). I hate her for what she's done to me (and to our family) and that she could be so uncaring for our relationship as to sleep with two other guys (one of whom she was sleeping with for six months and claimed to love).

The problem is that I still love her more than life itself and think that I may be able to get past what she's done because we have almost 30 years invested in our relationship. I think I can forgive her but know that I will never forget what she did.

HOW CAN I EVER TRUST HER AGAIN. My wife has always been a very selfish person. It's always been about her, and what she wants. Even if we get past all of this and reconcile, how do I ever trust her again. If she's working late in the city, traveling on business, or has a dinner meeting - how do I know that she hasn't slipped into another affair or is screwing some random guy? I am the jealous type and this is driving me crazy. She now tells me that she is sorry that she told me the truth about her affair and her one night stand (apparently lying came easy to her).

No matter how good things are with her in the future, I will always have that nagging doubt in my mind. She tells me that she had the affair because she was filling a void. She's a narcissist and needs constant adoration by others (she has told me so many times over the years how many guys have hit on her because she is so beautiful and successful). I worry that no matter what I do to make her happy, that some guy will smile at her, tell her wonderful things, and they will end up in bed together. I think it will drive me crazy for the rest of my life.

Should I move on? Is it possible to ever trust her again? The logical side of me says end the relationship and find someone who will be much more of a giver (my wife has always been a taker). The romantic side of me says I've loved her for 30 years and even though I know it's crazy, I can't stop.

I need advice as I'm really on the fence.

We have been living in separate bedrooms for the past three weeks and she just moved to her own apartment last weekend. I won't rat the other guy out to his wife as she's done nothing wrong (and it's not my place to make her miserable). There are other issues with the two of them but as long as it's over (and I'm sure it is) - it's no longer an issue.

I agree that my wife checked out a long time ago (she said that this has been a long time in coming) and that she must have so little respect for me to be able to easily do this with the long term affair partner (after she admitted the affair to me but before I found out the details, she would text him right in front of me and when I'd complain and tell her that she needed to end the affair , she'd tell me not to push her to make a choice as I wouldn't like the choice that she would make).

I know I allowed myself to be a doormat for her but love makes you do funny things.

Expos to other man's wife.

If you want her to respect you, you need to expose, and you think you 'don't want to make her miserable' thats a lie.

You just don't want to have to take action, but please don't tell yourself and try to spin it like your silence is doing that woman any favors or anything.

Her marriage is most likely crap, just that she doesn't know the exact reason WHY it is.

You need to expose. Puts your wife in her place, helps OMW, and gains you respect.

If you want to hide their affair then all you are doing is assisting them as their accomplice.

I got pretty much the same thing, your marriage is over

A week later she admitted to having an affair that had been ongoing for six months (he lived in another city but they both traveled on business and would meet up in different cities to spend nights together). I happened to see her phone one day and found a 40 message text thread. They claimed to love each other and were definitely sexually involved. My wife was pissed at me because I looked at her phone and that he ended their affair so abruptly. She also said that the affair had nothing to do with why she wanted to end our marriage (I think perhaps it emboldened her to want to move on and enjoy life as a single woman).

Tell his wife anyway, fvck him up. Nobody gets to fvck your wife and get away with it. TELL EVERYONE, family friends, etc., embarrass the sh!t out of her. Do it now so you can say you were very upset at the time instead of trickling. Maybe she will wake up, but doubtful.

It is what she admits to, there could very well be more, but who knows.

The biggest mistake was already made. Now release your anger, file for divorce. If she isn't falling all over herself RIGHT NOW trying to make things right, she ain't gonna make things right. You are setting yourself up to be her plan B. Maybe forcing her hand will wake her the fvck up, but I doubt it will.

The problem is that I still love her more than life itself and think that I may be able to get past what she's done because we have almost 30 years invested in our relationship. I think I can forgive her but know that I will never forget what she did.

Same with me, but there is such a thing as tough love. Release her to see if she comes back.

Good luck with that one, I can't. Tell her you have demands if she wants to R. If she baulks at any of them, it's time for you to D. You have to force HER hand. She will show you immediately. My wife wanted me to work for her. Someone who wants back in will work for you.

I assume you are at least 50 years old. It was easier for me because I am younger. Starting over sucks, but with the internet, a little working out and new clothes, you will be up to your eyeballs in poon in no time. Chicks are digging me already and I am not even divorced yet. The same will hold true for you as long as you aren't a pu$$y about it.

Should I move on? Is it possible to ever trust her again? The logical side of me says end the relationship and find someone who will be much more of a giver (my wife has always been a taker). The romantic side of me says I've loved her for 30 years and even though I know it's crazy, I can't stop.

I can't make the decision for you, but it sure looks like you will have your work cut out for you. File for divorce out of the blue. Tell her she has hurt you deeply and if she wants to truly work on us, she will have months to do so. The marriage is not over until the papers are signed. Stop telling her you love her, no pet names either, no affection. Do the 180, it works for you and could bring her back, but don't count on it.

I need advice as I'm really on the fence.

Get off the fence and make her work for you now, or just sh!tcan it all. She will show her true intentions eventually. Remember this, a 50 year old woman cheater has a much worse chance on her own that a man like you. You will be swimming in chicks and she will be cast aside. Just wear a condom. The largest growing STD population is in your age group.

TELL THE OM's WIFE NOW. Do it or you will regret it later. I will put money down that the affair will start again, at least she thinks it will.

The OM obviously doesn't want her to know, he will probably try to save his marriage like you are, and really kick your wife to the curb. They are lying in wait right now. Even if he does leave his wife for her, you aren't losing anything but a cheating spouse. She will cheat on him too.

STOP BEING A DOORMAT. Grown some nuts, NOW!!!! I know it is tough, but everyone here sees exactly what is going on. You see through your own clouded lovey eyes.

It has happened a million times before and will a million times more. All of these people here know what they are doing. File now, so you can be rid of her sooner and cruise for chicks. OR, get her back on board sooner.

P.S. When you expose and she gets mad at you for telling his wife, you know she is gone and is playing you.

You say you don't want to make his wife miserable. So, you let it go, let him live a lie, ready to hop in the sack with some other woman. You have no idea what this man has been exposed to in the past. You really have no idea if your wife has told the entire truth about how many other men she has slept with. She could have picked something up and passed it to you or even to the OM without knowing it. Or, the OM could have done the same thing to your wife or his wife. The OMW needs to be aware of what a POS her husband is. And it's very possible she DOES know, and just doesn't have the PROOF because he was deleting everything. She deserves to know what she's married to.

As Kasler pointed out, it's about respect. What the OMW does with the information is up to her, but you need to tell her, if for no other reason than that she can get tested for STDs, which he could very well have brought home to her.

Tell the woman. Personally, I'd be LIVID if someone knew my husband was cheating and didn't say anything to me because they felt "it isn't my place to tell." That's a cop out.

HbtW,

Similar story here... at 30 years marriage, find out my wife has been serially cheating for the last 6+ years of marriage, the last was her new "soul mate" and was planning to leave for Fantasy Island el pronto.

A major concern you have... Trust. In truth, you will never fully trust your wife again regardless of R or D. That being said, you can still have a relationship. If you R, you get to join us in the "Trust and Verify Brigade." Just the way it is.

Memories... Honest, you will never forget. Her betrayal is now apart of your marriage. Whether you can live with it (the 800 pounder in the corner)... only time knows. In 6 months to a year or two you will be given your answer. There just no crystal ball when it comes to R.

Lastly, stop with the "Man Law" bs and expose the OM today. I sense you somewhat worry/concern that it will make your wife mad and she will react. Do you understand... you need to know exactly her reaction to this exposure. It will give you an idea of the "Trust" that you wonder about. Regardless, would you wanted to be in the dark if the roles were reversed.
