Days of unrest continue to ensue after extremists breached the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, Egypt on September 11th. Protesters attacked the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, killing American Ambassador, Chris Stevens. A wave of protests against several other U.S. embassies has since emerged.

For travelers in these parts of the world, safety and security are of utmost concern. Increased threats have caused the United States to increase security at U.S. embassies worldwide. These events have also led the State Department to issue travel warnings which recommend American travelers consider the risks of traveling to those countries.

Many travel insurance policies offer trip cancellation or trip interruption coverage in the event of a terrorist incident. Typically, the incident would have to occur in a city listed on a traveler?s itinerary and must occur after the policy?s effective date. Some plans offer both foreign and domestic coverage and some plans only provide coverage if a traveler is scheduled to arrive within a set number of days of the occurence. It is always best to check a policy?s certificate to determine any exclusions related to terrorism, as policies may vary.
