About Kyle Osborne

I?m a military brat who started working in radio about a month before my 20th birthday. I worked for the Belgian affiliate of the Armed Forces Network Europe, mostly doing mundane chores, like erasing tape cartridges. I got a Saturday morning radio show and was still a teenager, when I opened a hot mic for the first time, broadcasting to parts of Belgium, Luxembourg, and The Netherlands. Read More ?>

?Who Am I to Judge??

Pope Francis listens to journalists' questions as he flies back Rome following his visit to Brazil July 29, 2013. Pope Francis listens to journalists' questions as he flies back Rome following his visit to Brazil on July 29, 2013

It?s refreshing when a man whose job titles include supreme pontiff and vicar of Christ says, ?Well, who am I to judge??

The news wires have been buzzing since Pope Francis gave an informal interview to journalists on his airplane Monday and said: ?A gay person who is seeking God, who is of good will?well, who am I to judge him?? He went on to say that homosexuals are ?our brothers and sisters? who ?should not be marginalized.?

Did the pope just soften the church?s teaching on homosexuality? Not really. And even if he was somehow trying to do that, stray papal remarks don?t unwind the dogma of a church. But his words do mean something. And, unfortunately, the big, dumb, prefab debate over what Francis meant will obscure some of the more interesting questions about his papacy.

The ?Who? Me, judge?? quote came while his holiness was questioned about a ?gay lobby? in the Vatican?a clique rumored to mostly protect each other?s interests rather than to advance an agenda. It?s likely that reporters and the pontiff also had in mind Fr. Ricca, who was recently appointed to a temporary position at the Vatican Bank. Depending on your view, Ricca has been exposed or smeared in Italian papers for being involved with men, and it has also been suggested his career has been saved from scandal by powerful friends in the alleged ?gay lobby.?

Conservative and traditionalist Catholics have been anxious to point out that there?s no substantive change?no dogmatic evolution?signaled in Pope Francis?s remarks at all. They have a point. When Francis said that gays should not be marginalized, he was referring to the church?s Catechism. His whole statement as quoted seems to be a gentle paraphrase of paragraph 2358 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which has been in place since 1994: ?They [homosexuals] must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.?

Translation: Even if you are attracted to members of the same sex, so long as you are sincerely trying to live by the strict moral standards of ancient faith of the One True Church, Francis isn?t going to judge you. Not exactly the long-desired capitulation of the Roman Church to modern sexual mores.

But what people are really responding to in this ?Who am I?? quote is its ?no big deal, man? spirit. The popular image of the church is that its fustian prelates are just plain uncomfortable even acknowledging homosexuality. Francis projects the serene confidence of an Episcopalian with four aces. Intentionally or not, his holiness has called into question the official (and mostly ignored) policy of the church set by the predecessor he is anxious to canonize, Pope John XXIII, who barred gays from the priesthood in 1961: ?Advancement to religious vows and ordination should be barred to those who are afflicted with the evil tendencies to homosexuality or pederasty, since for them the common life and the priestly ministry would constitute serious danger."

But while conservatives bleat ?it?s not news,? and liberals cheer ?Good! More now, please? a lot of other interesting things from this interview and from Francis? pontificate have been overlooked.

For one thing, Pope Francis not only touted the impending canonizations of Pope John XIII and Pope John Paul II, but also the ?causes? of Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul I. Are we seriously to believe that every recent pope was a saint, even when the church has experienced unbelievable contraction and criminal scandal under their pontificates? Seems like the Church needs an ?Advocatus Diaboli? again to point out the faults of candidates for sainthood. I?d be happy to oblige.?

Reports are also coming out that Francis has, in principle, reversed the one major effort of his still-breathing predecessor, which was to give liberty to all priests to say the traditional Latin Mass, which had been practically suppressed after 1970. Benedict?s ideal was that priests should be able to choose between the traditional and the new mass, in hopes that the beauty and dignity of the old might counterbalance the banality of the new. On Monday, it was reported that the Vatican has decreed that one religious order?s priests are now forbidden from saying the Old Mass unless they get explicit permission. The ruling reflects the pope?s style; Francis personally embraces a ?strip-the-altars? mode of worship, which, of course, no one asks about. Is the policy restricting the Traditional Mass returning for the rest of the church? Was Benedict wrong?

According to reports at the conclave, Cardinal Bergoglio was elected pope because he promised to reform the Curia, the group of clerical bureaucrats who run the Vatican. While generating a million headlines about gay priests on his plane he admitted that on the reform front, ?It's true that I haven't done a lot yet.? That?s putting it lightly. Even by Italy?s standards, Pope Francis has let the discredited members of the previous administration hang on for a long time. In previous interviews Pope Francis has cast all responsibility for reform of the Vatican and its bank on committees he has appointed. He frequently reminds us that he isn?t interested in administrative details. Maybe someone in the all-too-credulous Vatican press corps could press him about that?

Gov. Rick Scott helps Golf Channel celebrate 88 new jobs

Gov. Rick Scott came to Orlando on Tuesday to help The Golf Channel celebrate the creation of 88 new jobs for which it received government incentives.

A spokesman for the Golf Channel said the network has added the new jobs primarily in digital media and had made a capital investment of $4.4 million.

Those figures exceed the requirements of two incentive deals the network made with Orlando and the state.

"The expansion has been consistent and steady but in the last couple of years since Golf Channel has been part of NBC Sports, we've really super-charged that growth," said Mike McCarley, president of NBC Golf Media. "Because of the pro-business, pro-growth environment that both the mayor and the governor have created, it's really helped us add more and more of the jobs to the Orlando area."

In exchange for creating 75 jobs and investing $1.9 million in capital improvements, the company is slated to receive $583,000 in government incentives under the Qualified Target Industry Tax Refund and the Quick Action Closing Fund, a discretionary pot of money controlled by the governor.

The jobs must have a minimum average annual salary of $75,000, not counting the value of benefits.

The popular cable TV network has been in expansion mode recently, including the construction of a new combination studio-newsroom earlier this year.

Scott praised the Golf Channel for its success and said the network's announcement brought Florida closer to adding the 700,000 jobs he promised during his campaign for governor three years ago.

"We're almost halfway there, with 333,000 jobs in two-and-a-half years," he said. "I grew up in a family that struggled to have a job, so every time we announce jobs, it's a big deal."

Scott has made job creation the cornerstone both of his first term and for his re-election bid next year.

Kathy DeVault, director of strategic partnerships for the City of Orlando, said the positions were at risk of going to Stamford, Conn., where Golf Channel's parent company has a large presence.

Earlier Tuesday, Scott was in Flagler County to announce the expansion of Aveo Engineering, an electronics maker for the aerospace industry.

Scott said Aveo is planning a design and manufacturing facility in the county with 300 jobs and $7.5 million in capital investment.

RealNetworks Gets Serious About Social Casino Gaming With $15.6M Slingo Acquisition, New Sweepstakes

Screen Shot 2013-07-31 at 9.05.22 AMRealNetworks, a Seattle-based publicly-traded company that runs RealPlayer and has a gaming arm, is digging into social casino games with a deal to buy Slingo for $15.6 million. It’s also launching a new kind of casino game that involves a $100,000 sweepstakes called Gamehouse Casino Plus. The two moves are meant to revitalize RealNetworks’ gaming business, which brought in $13.9 million in the quarter ending in March of this year. Slingo is a combo of bingo and slots and has more than 4.5 million people monthly active users on Facebook, plus more on mobile platforms and on physical slot machines in casinos. The game launched on Facebook back in February of last year, and reached a peak of more than 50 million monthly active users. It also came to Android and iOS through Slingo Supreme, a paid app. The physical game, which is in Slingo-branded slot machines, is played in more than 300 casinos in the U.S. and RealNetworks says that more than $1 billion Slingo-branded tickets have been sold through other lottery games. “Real money gaming in the U.S. is not going to become a mainstream thing anytime soon,” said RealNetworks CEO Rob Glaser. But he said he believed that studios can still innovate on the social casino genre, which has become increasingly competitive over the last two years. In Gamehouse Casino Plus, players play your typical casino games — like slots, video poker, blackjack and roulette — but they also win tickets to participate in a $100,000 sweepstakes every month.

Pirates: Frantic Ford asks for MP's help in Hancock saga

Pirates: Frantic Ford asks for MP's help in Hancock saga

PIRATES chief Matt Ford has enlisted the power of Parliament to aid Greg Hancock's race against time ahead of tonight's meeting with Coventry.

The prospect of Hancock making his home debut hangs in the balance as he waits for his passport to be returned to Stockholm following UK Border Agency checks over his visa application.

And with the clock ticking, Ford pulled out all the stops and contacted Poole MP Robert Syms in the hope that he could help ensure the Grand Prix legend's paperwork was completed and swiftly sent back to Sweden.

All of the boxes have been ticked but Ford is still unable to confirm whether the documents will reach the American veteran in time for him to fly into England for his Wimborne Road introduction against the Bees (7.30pm).

Ford told the Daily Echo: ?To be honest, we have done everything we can now. All the necessary paperwork is done and we know it will be back there for Thursday.

?There is still a hope that it will be there before then but we are not going to know until the last minute.

?We asked our MP Robert Syms for his assistance but, unfortunately, we haven't been able to reach him directly.

?His office confirmed that he had put a call in on our behalf but, at the moment, that is all we know. We just don't know what will happen.?

And Ford, who stunned the speedway world by persuading two-times world champion Hancock to stand in for stricken star Chris Holder, couldn't hide his annoyance at the potential hold-up.

He added: ?Greg spent most of Monday at different embassies in Stockholm to see if they would issue him a second passport, but these things aren't readily available these days.

?We are hopeful he won't miss out but it would incredibly frustrating if he did. He lives in Sweden, rides all over Europe and travels everywhere around in the Grand Prix, but cannot enter Britain.

?I have lost an awful lot of sleep battling against these things but we will find out over the next few hours whether he has his passport back.

?It is frustrating for Greg - he already has two mechanics over here - and for me, but we still have an incredibly important meeting going ahead where we can chase down the play-offs.?

Meanwhile, Hancock told the Daily Echo: ?We are hoping to hear by the middle of the day. I am supposed to be picking up my passport just before noon and if all goes well, I will be there ready and raring to go.

?Things have changed with work permits and, whoever you are, you have to work within the same rules as everyone else.

?All we can do is be honest and hope that they (the Border Agency) will work with us and help us. It is a real race against the clock.?

The Daily Echo was yesterday unable to contact Mr Syms.

OpenTable Wants to Fix the Single Most Annoying Thing About Eating Out

You just finished a delicious meal. You're itching to move on to the next spot to get more drinks. Or you're hoping to wrap up your meal so you can pay the sitter. Or maybe you just want to get the hell out of the restaurant just because. Whatever it is, you spend a snail's lifetime trying to flag down the waitress to get your bill. Another half life waiting for her to take your credit card. And a century and half for you to get it back so you can sign the damn thing. Taking care of the bill is the most annoying thing about eating out. OpenTable wants to change that.

Ex-Texas QB Connor Brewer says he?s transferring to Arizona

Connor BrewerAP

Alabama and Notre Dame were said to be among the handful of schools interested in the services of former Texas quarterback Connor Brewer. Turns out, neither will end up getting the ?Horns transfer.

Instead, the redshirt freshman announced via his Twitter account that he will head back to his home state and play for the Arizona Wildcats.

Jason Jewel of 247Sports and Bruce Feldman of CBSSports?previously reported Brewer?s decision. For what it?s worth, UA hasn?t officially commented and likely won?t until Brewer signs his grant-in-aid and enrolls. Brewer would be eligible to play in 2014.

Additionally, 247Sports is reporting that former Longhorns wide receiver Cayleb Jones is looking at the Wildcats as a possible transfer destination as well.

Brewer was an early enrollee at Texas in January of 2012. ?A four-star member of UT?s recruiting class that year, Brewer was rated by Rivals.com as the No. 10 pro-style-quarterback in the country and the No. 5 player at any position in the state of Arizona.?He left Chaparral High School with 100 career touchdown passes, a state record, and won three state championships.

He redshirted his true freshman season and remained buried on the Longhorns? depth chart exiting spring practices.

Nothing to 'chuckle' about: Despite what Obama says, Keystone jobs no laughing matter [Video]

Report an error

n an interview with the New York Times on Saturday, U.S. President Barack Obama ?chuckled? ? that?s what the Times called his reaction ? when he was asked about the number of jobs that would be created by the proposed Keystone XL pipeline.

?Republicans have said that this would be a big jobs generator. There is no evidence that that?s true,? said Obama. ?The most realistic estimates are this might create maybe 2,000 jobs during the construction of the pipeline ? which might take a year or two ? and then after that we?re talking about somewhere between 50 and 100 (chuckles) jobs in a economy of 150 million working people.? The Times actually added the word ?chuckles? to their report.

But it?s hard to find the humour. Five years after the Great Recession began, the U.S. unemployment rate has not returned to pre-recession levels. Worse, millions of Americans have dropped out of the workforce, giving up looking for jobs at all. The real youth unemployment rate ? including those who have stopped looking for a job ? is a staggering 23%.

Those young Americans might want one of those 2,000 construction jobs. TransCanada says it will be 20,000 construction jobs ? which sounds plausible, given that it?s a $7.6 billion dollar infrastructure project.

Obama?s own State Department conducted an exhaustive study on the pipeline ? several studies, actually, comprising more than 12,000 pages ? and they estimate building the pipe would create 42,000 jobs.

It?s surely true that the pipeline?s construction jobs would end once it?s constructed. That?s the nature of construction. Carpenters don?t stick around after a family has moved in to a house, either. But for 42,000 construction workers, the Keystone XL is the ?next? job they?ve been waiting for since it was first proposed by TransCanada back in 2008. They?re still waiting. Those who haven?t given up yet.

The U.S. government has been reviewing the project for close to five years. Which is longer than it took the U.S. to win the Second World War, after Pearl Harbor was attacked.

Perhaps Obama is unfamiliar or uncomfortable with jobs that are created by the private sector, jobs for which he cannot take political credit, jobs in red states, in the Republican heartland. His own life?s work, and his wife?s too, has been a series of public sector jobs from ?community organizer? to professor to politician. His own $26-billion green jobs plan ? including half a billion to the now-bankrupt solar panel company, Solyndra ? created less than 2,300 permanent jobs, or about $11 million a pop. And then there was his failed bailout of Detroit.

It isn?t the president?s job to approve or disapprove of pipelines; it?s not in the U.S. Constitution. The only reason Obama has any say in this pipeline is because it crosses the Canada-U.S. border.

There are more than 80 pipelines that cross the border. But this president is the first to make an international incident out of regular commerce ? and to hold thousands of U.S. jobs hostage

to wealthy environmental activists.

The Keystone XL pipeline will be approved one day. Perhaps politically bundled with a proposed new carbon tax; perhaps after the 2014 mid-term elections, once Obama wrings tens of millions more out of his eco-donors; perhaps in the final days of his administration in 2016. But every day that goes by, thousands of American workers sit on their hands. And OPEC princes laugh and laugh.

Urban Lore Debunked in New eBook: Fact or Fiction: Science Tackles 58 Popular Myths

Did NASA really spend millions creating a pen that would write in space? Is chocolate poisonous to dogs? Does stress cause gray hair? These questions are just a sample of the urban lore investigated in our newest eBook, Fact or Fiction: Science Tackles 58 Popular Myths. Drawing from Scientific American?s ?Fact or Fiction? and ?Strange But True? columns, we?ve selected 58 of the most surprising, fascinating, useful and just plain wacky topics confronted by our writers over the years. Each brief article uncovers the truth behind everyday mythology, starting with Section One, ?In the Animal Kingdom,? where we examine some of the more outlandish claims about our fellow earthly inhabitants, such as whether elephants really remember everything and whether a cockroach can live without its head.

Other sections cover reproduction, the environment, technology and personal and mental health. In ?Babies and Parents,? the writers advise as to whether or not you should buy The Complete Mozart for your yet-to-be baby and whether or not Dad can help out with the breast-feeding. The sections ?Health Habits,? ?The Body? and ?Mind and Brain? explore just how much of our common conceptions surrounding our selves and well-being are based in fact or aren?t.

Whereas the answers to some questions, such as whether toilets really do flush in the opposite direction south of the equator, may only serve to fill your Trivial Pursuit pie, others, such as whether to wake a sleep walker or whether urine relieves the sting of a jellyfish, may come in more handy. This eBook represents a tiny fraction of circulating folk wisdom and urban mythology, but we hope it?s an enjoyable fraction and encourages you to do some well-informed debunking yourself.

Groupon Loses Mobile Head David Katz, Who Is Heading To Sports Commerce Site Fanatics

Groupon continues to roll out new products that point to the e-commerce company?s ongoing ambitions to move beyond the daily deal and further into becoming a central hub for local and mobile commerce. But come August, it will be doing so without one of its most senior mobile execs. David Katz, VP and GM of consumer mobile, is leaving the company at the end of next month and taking up a position as SVP and GM of mobile for Fanatics, the sports apparel commerce site.

Katz passed on the news to friends and colleagues in an email, which TechCrunch obtained via an anonymous tipster. We?re including that below.

Meanwhile, Groupon has also confirmed Katz?s departure, interim management for mobile, and plans for recruiting a replacement:

?David is leaving Groupon at the end of the month to take another position,? a spokesperson told TechCrunch. ?We?ve begun a search for a new leader of our Consumer Mobile division. Groupon has very deep and talented mobile team that will continue to report to?our Senior Vice President of Product Development?Jeff Holden, and we?re excited about the future for one of the fastest-growing Mobile operations in the industry.?

Fanatics, which had been acquired by GSI Commerce (now eBay Enterprise) in March 2011, was?spun out of the company as part of Kynetic (a new company from the founder of GSI Commerce) just seven months later. Sports apparel is big business. In June of this year, Fanatics was valued at $3.1 billion when it raised $170 million from Singapore?s Temasek and Alibaba. Prior to that, Fanatics had raised $225 million from Andreessen Horowitz, Insight Venture Partners and Bank of America for its network of sports commerce sites, focused mainly on apparel (one of the biggest in its portfolio of sites is Football Fanatics). Making a bigger move into mobile is a logical step for the company.

Katz has been with Groupon since April 2011, and before taking on the role of VP of mobile. Prior to that, he was VP and GM for retail solutions. And before that, Katz spent six years at Yahoo, with the last three as VP of mobile.

I?ve spoken with Katz several times about the launch of new mobile products, and he?s always been firmly focused on business as usual, despite there sometimes being more than a little drama going on around him. In the wake of co-founder and CEO Andrew Mason getting ousted, Katz told me that it was simply ?business as usual? at Groupon, with the company just focused on shipping new products.

He was also one of the key people there trying to make sure that what Groupon was doing in the U.S. would also see light outside of North America ? no small task, considering that much of Groupon?s international growth was inorganic and therefore based on different IT systems. The question going forward will be whether whoever succeeds Katz and Groupon will continue to give mobile the same focus it has had up to now, and whether that ambition connects with consumers, both in the U.S. and elsewhere.

We?ve reached out to Katz for comment. For now, here?s his memo:

Dear Friends,

Just a quick note to let you know that I?m going to be leaving Groupon and joining Fanatics, Inc. as SVP and GM, Mobile.

Meilutyte, other teens doing just fine at worlds

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? For Ruta Meilutyte, a gold medal would merely be a bonus.

She's already grabbed what she came for at these world swimming championships.

A breakout star at last year's London Olympics, the 16-year-old from Lithuania set the first world record of the meet Monday night ? in the semifinals of the 100-meter breaststroke, no less.

Meilutyte will be an overwhelming favorite in the final Tuesday, but she considers the record a bigger accomplishment than a world championship. She nearly broke the mark during the morning preliminaries, then returned in the evening to go even faster.

The youngster touched in 1 minute, 4.35 seconds, beating the record set by American Jessica Hardy in 2009 at the end of the rubberized suit era.

"My biggest aim is accomplished now and I'll give it my best shot in the final," said Meilutyte, who trains in Britain. "It's one of the steps, one of the dreams. Obviously, a gold medal would be a cherry on top."

The kids are doing all right at these worlds, that's for sure.

Eighteen-year-old Missy Franklin cruised into the final of the 100 backstroke as the top qualifier, despite a tough start in the semifinals when her right leg slipped while pushing off the wall. Another young American, 16-year-old Katie Ledecky, followed up her gold medal in the 400 freestyle by easily qualifying for the 1,500 free final.

"It's so incredible to see the youth that the sport has and that it will continue to have," Franklin said. "It's so awesome watching it and kind of being a part of this whole experience as it's happening."

There were no American golds on the second night of swimming at the Palau Sant Jordi.

Christian Sprenger made sure the Australian men won't endure another gold-medal shutout like the one in London, edging South African world-record holder Cameron van der Burgh in the men's 100 breast.

"To finally have the Australian anthem played for me, it's an extraordinary feeling, and after a swim I couldn't be prouder of," Sprenger said. "Our team had some setbacks last year, but we came through stronger. We are going to be back and going to be stronger."

Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom knocked off another world-record holder, Dana Vollmer of the U.S., in the 100 butterfly. For Sjostrom, the victory came four years after she won the same event at the world championships in Rome, which was followed by the bitter disappointment of fourth-place finishes at both the 2011 worlds and the Olympics.

"It's hard to believe because my confidence hasn't been that good after lots of fourth places," she said. "Now I am so happy. My confidence is so much better now. I know I can swim so much faster."

Vollmer, who took an extended break after the Olympics and came into the event battling an illness, settled for the bronze with a time more than a second off her gold-medal performance in London.

"The goal is to always try and win, but with where I am right now I am really happy with the bronze," Vollmer said. "I needed the fall off to recharge looking to 2016. It is disappointing now, but it lights that fire to get back in the pool and keep working hard for Rio."

Hungary's Katinka Hosszu ran away with a dominating win in the women's 200 individual medley, with Ye Shiwen among those in her wake. The 17-year-old from China, another of the young stars at the last Olympics, was last at the final turn and settled for fourth ? not even making the medal podium in Barcelona.

Ye swept the IMs in London, setting a world record in the 400.

"That was slower than expected but I did everything I could," she said through a translator. "After the Olympics I couldn't sleep, so I couldn't prepare like I had done before. I'm five kilograms heavier than I was at the Olympics. I need to go back and train harder and hopefully I'll do better next time. I was happy with my butterfly but nothing else."

Hosszu made it look easy, leading at every stroke change and cruising to the wall nearly 1.5 seconds ahead of the field.

"That was kind of my plan to go out and be aggressive from the beginning," she said. "I saw nobody was coming, so I just wanted to touch the wall and start celebrating."

Hosszu finished nearly 7 seconds behind Ye in the 200 IM at London, and just missed a medal with a fourth-place finish in the 400 IM.

This time, it was Ye coming over to shake hands with the winner.

"I was really surprised," Hosszu said. "I wasn't sure of the order after me. It was only later I saw she wasn't on the podium. I am sure she will be back on the podium. She is a great swimmer."

Longtime Brazilian star Cesar Cielo took gold in the 50 fly ? a non-Olympic event ? with Eugene Godsoe of the U.S. grabbing the silver.

But Meilutyte was the star of the night without even winning a medal.

She just keeps getting better after upsetting American Rebecca Soni for the Olympic gold in the 100 breast last summer. With Soni taking the year off, there's no doubt that Meilutyte is the new queen of the breaststroke ? at the moment and perhaps years to come.

"It's a new breed of swimmer coming up," van der Burgh said. "The 100 has become more of a sprint than it was before. If you are too slow than you can never catch up, and I think that's the big change."

Australia's Alicia Coutts didn't win gold but deserved a shout-out for pulling off a grueling double. She finished second in both the 100 fly and 200 IM, one night after anchoring the Aussies to silver in the 400 free relay.

Coutts was in tears after getting caught by American Megan Romano in the relay, feeling she let her team down, but the Aussie is piling up quite a medal haul in Barcelona.

The home crowd got a thrill when Mireia Belmonte of Spain won bronze in the 200 IM.

Meanwhile, Ryan Lochte put himself in position to take a run at his first individual gold of these championships. He was the second-fastest qualifier in the semifinals of the 200 free behind Russia's Danila Izotov.

JERUSALEM ? An official says Israel?s Cabinet has approved the release of 104 long-held Palestinian prisoners, clearing a hurdle toward a possible resumption of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks after five years of paralysis.

Sunday?s 13-7 vote with two abstentions came after a stormy session. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged ministers to approve the release, saying it?s important for Israel to restart talks with the Palestinians.

Two ministers of Netanyahu?s Likud Party voted no, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters.

The Cabinet approved the release in four stages over several months, with each step linked to progress in the negotiations.

According to a list provided by the Palestinians, the prisoners have served between 19 and 30 years for involvement in deadly attacks on Israelis.

(AP) ? Actress Charlize Theron has pledged her support in the campaign against AIDS during a meeting with South African President Jacob Zuma.

Theron, an ambassador for the United Nations program on AIDS, met Zuma in Pretoria on Monday to discuss the fight against AIDS in South Africa and across the continent.

The South Africa-born actress says the world has the ability to usher in "an AIDS-free generation." She says that the goal can become a reality with strong leadership like that displayed by Zuma.

According to UNAIDS, South Africa has reduced the number of new HIV infections by 12 percent in the last two years. Last year, more than 8 million HIV tests were done. However, South Africa wants citizens to get tested at least once a year.

Brake failure caused fatal church camp bus crash, driver says

(Reuters) - The driver of a bus that crashed at the weekend killing three people and injuring 26 others as they returned from a church camp told witnesses the brakes failed as the bus exited an interstate highway, a spokeswoman for the Indianapolis Fire Department said on Sunday.

Dennis Maurer, 68, of Indianapolis, was driving 37 passengers, mainly teenagers, from a summer camp in Michigan to the Colonial Hills Baptist Church in northern Indianapolis when the bus crashed into a lane barrier as it left Interstate 465, said spokeswoman Rita Burris.

They were only a couple of miles from their destination when the accident happened.

Youth pastor Chad Phelps and his wife, Courtney Phelps, as well as Tonya Weindorf, the mother of one of the children on the bus, were killed, a Colonial Hills Baptist Church spokeswoman told Reuters.

Twenty-six others were taken to area hospitals with various injuries, two of them by helicopter, officials said.

New Yorkers Celebrate Space at Intrepid Museum's SpaceFest

NEW YORK ? The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum was bustling early Friday (July 26), as hundreds of visitors waited patiently to take part in the second-annual SpaceFest celebration aboard the converted aircraft carrier on the western edge of Manhattan.

The Intrepid is hosting the four-day space-themed event to promote science and exploration, and to showcase the museum's most famous artifact: the space shuttle Enterprise, NASA's prototype orbiter that was used in the late 1970s for approach and landing tests in the early days of the space shuttle program.

The SpaceFest events, which are being held within the Intrepid museum and along Pier 86 on Manhattan's West Side, drew hordes of excited children eager to catch a glimpse of Enterprise in its newly revamped exhibit. [Photos: Space Shuttle Enterprise Exhibit Reopens NYC Museum]

"I've seen the shuttle before, but I'm hoping to see it again today," said Joseph Negron, age 10. "It's totally awesome and ginormous. So huge."

The Intrepid's Space Shuttle Pavilion reopened to the public on July 10, after months of reconstruction to repair damage caused by Hurricane Sandy last October. The hurricane destroyed the temporary structure that had been built to house the shuttle prototype on the deck of the World War II-era aircraft carrier.

A miniature shuttle

In addition to touring the new Space Shuttle Pavilion, SpaceFest attendees were also on hand for Friday's unveiling of a 3.5-foot long (1.2 meters) LEGO replica of the shuttle Enterprise.

The model, which was crafted using about 15,000 pieces, features payload bay doors that can open and shut, and fully retractable landing gear.

Ed Diment, the LEGO "Master Builder" who created the toy model, spent two months building a 1/40th scale prototype of Enterprise. After that, it took about two weeks to assemble the replica and add the finishing touches, he said.

"I want people to see the kinds of things you can achieve with engineering, and hopefully it will inspire them to come up with the next generation of things that will come after, now that the space shuttle has been retired," Diment told SPACE.com.

The model weighs about 20 pounds, and will go on display in the Intrepid museum after the SpaceFest celebration wraps up. Diment previously built a LEGO replica of the U.S.S. Intrepid, which is also displayed in the museum.

"I don't know where it's going to be, but maybe they'll put it on the back of the Intrepid model, so it'll be just like the real thing, with the space shuttle on the deck of the aircraft carrier," Diment said.

Michael Kalenty, a 15-year-old from Hillsborough, N.J., is one of the SpaceFest exhibitors representing FIRST Robotics, a high school robotics organization that aims to promote the study of science and engineering. Kalenty and his teammates will be demonstrating their robotic creations throughout the course of the SpaceFest events, and he said he hopes other kids will be inspired to join programs.

Before the crowds started rushing in, however, Kalenty took a moment to admire the LEGO Enterprise model, which was on display under a neighboring tent.

"I read that the model was going to be unveiled here on the pier, so I was excited that I would actually have time to go see it," Kalenty said.

Science in action

Others were interested in the hands-on science experiments and interactive displays that were set up along the pier and inside the Intrepid's hangars.

"I came here last year, and I thought they had a lot of great things to offer, so we wanted to come and learn about what's new," said Kerry Brennan, a teacher from Boonton, N.J., who brought along her 10-year-old son Turner.

"I'm excited to learn about all the things about Mars and the Curiosity rover," Turner said.

Samuel Gensen, an 11-year-old from Belgium, is visiting New York City with his family. As he walked around the converted aircraft carrier, he was particularly taken by the various space artifacts on display.

"It's the first time we've seen spaceships, so we're kind of happy," Gensen said.

Inside the Space Shuttle Pavilion, visitors gazed up at the shuttle Enterprise, which sits raised just 10 feet (3 meters) off the ground.

"It's amazing seeing the size of it, and getting some appreciation for the shuttle itself," said Helena Pelletier, from Ontario, Canada. "One of our friends actually flew in the space shuttle ? Chris Hadfield," she said, referring to the famed Canadian Space Agency astronaut who recently completed a six-month stay on the International Space Station.

Amid the fun and games, Vic Smith hoped SpaceFest would help his children learn more about NASA's now-retired space shuttle program, and help nurture their interest in science and technology.

"Our initial plan was to come and check out the unveiling of the LEGO model, and then see the space shuttle," Smith, who is visiting the museum from Minneapolis, Minn., with his sons Lendale, 13, and Francis, 9, told SPACE.com. "I want to get them inspired by all this space stuff."

SpaceFest continues through the weekend, and most events are free with museum admission. The full schedule is available on the Intrepid's website: http://www.intrepidmuseum.org/SpaceFest2013.aspx

Other highlights of this year's celebration include:

  • Presentations and autograph signings with astronauts Ellen Baker, Mario Runco, Jr., Charles Camarda, Lee Morin.
  • A free astronomy night on Saturday (July 27), with local astronomers on hand to help visitors navigate the cosmos.
  • Interactive displays and demonstrations of gadgets like virtual goggles that take visitors into outer space, 3-D printers, and design-it-yourself lunar landing video games.

Software experts attack cars, to release code as hackers meet

Security

Car hacking is not a new field, but its secrets have long been closely guarded. That is about to change, thanks to two well-known computer software hackers who got bored finding bugs in software from Microsoft and Apple.

Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek say they will publish detailed blueprints of techniques for attacking critical systems in the Toyota Prius and Ford Escape in a 100-page white paper, following several months of research they conducted with a grant from the U.S. government.

The two "white hats" ? hackers who try to uncover software vulnerabilities before criminals can exploit them ? will also release the software they built for hacking the cars at the Def Con hacking convention in Las Vegas this week.

They said they devised ways to force a Toyota Prius to brake suddenly at 80 miles an hour, jerk its steering wheel, or accelerate the engine. They also say they can disable the brakes of a Ford Escape traveling at very slow speeds, so that the car keeps moving no matter how hard the driver presses the pedal.

"Imagine what would happen if you were near a crowd," said Valasek, director of security intelligence at consulting firm IOActive, known for finding bugs in Microsoft's Windows software.

But it is not as scary as it may sound at first blush.

They were sitting inside the cars using laptops connected directly to the vehicles' computer networks when they did their work. So they will not be providing information on how to hack remotely into a car network, which is what would typically be needed to launch a real-world attack.

The two say they hope the data they publish will encourage other white-hat hackers to uncover more security flaws in autos so they can be fixed.

"I trust the eyes of 100 security researchers more than the eyes that are in Ford and Toyota," said Miller, a Twitter security engineer known for his research on hacking Apple's App Store.

Toyota spokesman John Hanson said the company was reviewing the work. He said the carmaker had invested heavily in electronic security, but that bugs remained ? as they do in cars of other manufacturers.

"It's entirely possible to do," Hanson said, referring to the newly exposed hacks. "Absolutely we take it seriously."

Ford spokesman Craig Daitch said the company takes seriously the electronic security of its vehicles. He said the fact that Miller's and Valasek's hacking methods required them to be inside the vehicle they were trying to manipulate mitigated the risk.

"This particular attack was not performed remotely over the air, but as a highly aggressive direct physical manipulation of one vehicle over an elongated period of time, which would not be a risk to customers and any mass level," Daitch said.

'Time to shore up defenses'
Miller and Valasek said they did not research remote attacks because that had already been done.

A group of academics described ways to infect cars using Bluetooth systems and wireless networks in 2011. But unlike Miller and Valasek, the academics have kept the details of their work a closely guarded secret, refusing even to identify the make of the car they hacked.

Their work got the attention of the U.S. government. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has begun an auto cybersecurity research program.

"While increased use of electronic controls and connectivity is enhancing transportation safety and efficiency, it brings a new challenge of safeguarding against potential vulnerabilities," the agency said in a statement. It said it knew of no consumer incident where a vehicle was hacked.

Still, some experts believe malicious hackers may already have the ability to launch attacks.

"It's time to shore up the defenses," said Tiffany Strauchs Rad, a researcher with Kaspersky Lab, who previously worked for an auto security research center.

A group of European computer scientists had been scheduled to present research on hacking the locks of luxury vehicles, including Porsches, Audis, Bentleys and Lamborghinis, at a conference in Washington in mid-August.

But Volkswagen obtained a restraining order from a British high court prohibiting discussion of the research by Flavio D. Garcia of the University of Birmingham, and Roel Verdult and Baris Ege of Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands.

A spokeswoman for the three scientists said they would pull out of the prestigious Usenix conference because of the restraining order. Both universities said they would hold off on publishing the paper, pending the resolution of litigation.

Volkswagen declined to comment.

Superman 75th Anniversary Events Happening in California and Ohio Today

Neal Adams Superman original artWhile last weekend saw Grant Morrison, Jim Lee, Dan Jurgens, Henry Cavill and others celebrate 75 years of Superman in a panel at San Diego Comic Con International, today will see two separate celebrations (that we know of) of the Man of Steel around the country.

In San Francisco, the Cartoon Art Museum has a Superman celebration schedule for today. According to the website for the event, The Cartoon Art Museum explores the rich history of Siegel and Shuster?s creation through original artwork by such notable talents as Golden Age Superman artists Fred Ray, Wayne Boring; Curt Swan, often cited as the character?s definitive artist; the legendary Neal Adams; John Byrne and Jerry Ordway, who revitalized Superman in the 1980s; the artists responsible for the widely-publicized ?Death of Superman? storyline in the early 1990s, Jon Bogdanove, Jackson Guice, Dan Jurgens, and many others. Vintage movie posters, costumes, and memorabilia will also be included in this historic display.

action-comics-1The exhibit has been ongoing since May and will continue through September, but tonight is the reception that serves as its biggest social event.

Meanwhile in the city that gave birth to the Last Son of Krypton, The Cleveland Public Library and The Ohio Center for the Book are pleased to celebrate the 75th birthday of the iconic Cleveland-born superhero with an exhibit showcasing the wonderful collection of Superman realia, memorabilia, photographs, and sundry paraphernalia from Mike Olszewski, president of the Siegel and Shuster Society. These treasures will be complemented by the Library?s own collection of Superman books and materials, including graphic novels, nonfiction works, and collectibles.

That exhibit has been open for two weeks and will remain open until September as well.

We?re sure there?s probably more than just these two going on, and we?ll update as people send them along.
