EXITING THE PITY PARTY:
An Experiment in Community Involvement
By Daren C. Falter
I?d like to share with you an experience I had last year that will illustrate the next critical principle. Over the last few years, I?ve been trying something new. It?s a special new program I like to call leaving the house. Yes, when you start to enjoy the advantages of staying home and operating a lucrative home business, you can really get used to it. Imagine getting up on Monday morning with no alarm clock, no staff meetings, and no boss hanging over your shoulder. Instead of rushing out the door so you?re not late, you put on your robe and slippers, admire your ?bed hair? in the mirror, and enjoy a leisurely breakfast with your family. Showering and getting dressed are discouraged, and turning on the car to defrost the window (or cool it down, as the case may be) is out of the question.
Sorry, I digressed a little. Back to leaving the house. Instead of my typical morning of barefoot, bed-head entrepreneurship, I decided to make a commitment to broadening my horizons. I started getting out at least twice per month to work in my own community and meet my fellow town folk, even if it meant showering, throwing on a sports coat, doing something with my hair, and ultimately leaving the comforts of my home office for the morning. Trust me when I say, twice per month is really pushing it for me. But through this process, I?ve discovered what most people still believe about home-based business.
Broke-A-Holics Anonymous
One of my adventures involved attending a monthly home-based business club, which consisted of a few dozen network marketers from my town sprinkled with a few self- employed folks who were supposedly looking for more business. To me, the group seemed more like a support club for unsuccessful home-based business owners. I envision this kind of greeting at our meetings.
Daren:???????????? Hi, my name is Daren, and I?m a home-based business owner.
Everyone:???? Hi, Daren.
Daren:???????????? Let?s see, I?ve been losing money in home business for three years now, but I?m really making progress now with my new twelve-step plan. I?m hopeful that with the support of this group, I?ll be breaking even sometime during the next thirty-six months.
Everyone:????? (Thunderous applause while everyone smiles, holding back the tears.)
Okay, so it wasn?t that bad. But the sad part was that I saw at least a dozen people in this group who had the intelligence and ambition to literally earn a minimum of six figures per year, if not much more, in their own home-based business, and they were all settling for peanuts. A few of them could be millionaires. But they simply lacked direction, and they didn?t know how to select the right home-based business. They also didn?t know any of the best strategies to build their businesses large and fast. Most of the activities planned by this group were focused on supporting each other?s promotions and events. It?s kind of like, ?I?ll come to your home party this week and bring a friend if you come to my opportunity meeting next week and bring your mother.?
Exiting the pity party
Already having years of experience in selecting and building successful home-based businesses and network marketing distributorships, I found myself feeling sorry for most of these struggling business owners. It seemed so obvious what the problem was, but they weren?t seeing it. Some of them were even a bit resentful about the fact that I was doing so well, yet no one asked my advice about anything. I felt like standing on my chair and shouting, ?People, wake up! Your lives are passing you by! When are you going to learn the principles of wealth and prosperity? When are you going to see past the end of this month? When are you going to stop working so hard for your money and stop stressing about your finances? When are you going to realize your business is not about you and your product? It?s about your customers and their wants and needs! When are you going to begin incorporating some kind of leverage into your businesses so you don?t have to be slaves to your businesses for the rest of your lives??
Of course I bit my tongue and resisted the impulse, because I didn?t want to break up the pity party. They seemed to at least be enjoying each other?s company. I guess that?s what many support groups are all about, helping you feel better about the miserable state you?re in. But trust me when I say this: you may not need a support group ever again for any aspect of your life once you establish your first successful home-based business. There?s so much more to this lifestyle than just making money, and if you embark on this adventure with me, you will soon understand what I?m saying.
After a few weeks of being pitched on many great products built around mediocre business models, I just stopped attending the home business support group. I realized that I was not looking to interact with other typical home-based business owners (too depressing). Most of them didn?t have any ambition to be financially free. They were just like employees, working and living month-to-month, just to make ends meet. Most of them did not see their home business as a BIG business. They didn?t see it as an opportunity to accumulate wealth. They didn?t see their business as a means to financial independence. Most of them were pursuing a home business because of some circumstance that prevented them from holding a regular job or because they had some technical expertise that led them to self-employment by default. One of the things you?ll learn in this article is the difference between self-employment and business ownership, and knowing the difference makes all the difference.
Would You Rather be Right or Rich?
So are these lost souls worth saving? They all could turn their businesses around if they were willing to let go of their own ideas (the ideas that brought them to this miserable point) and seek the advice of industry experts who have already blazed a successful trail. But it has to happen before they?re too far-gone. I?ve discovered that once people are emotionally indoctrinated with erroneous marketing principles or bad business ideas, it?s very hard to turn them around. Approach them early or lose them forever. Once they?ve made up their minds, most people would rather be right than rich. In other words, most people would rather spend the rest of their lives trying to justify their decisions for business failure rather than swallow their pride and ask for help and advice from a successful home-based business owner.
Again, writer Josh Billings comes to mind in this situation when he stated, ?Most people when they come to you for advice, come to have their own opinions strengthened, not corrected.?3
Here?s My Advice, If It?s Worth Anything to You
My job as company selection coach and consultant is not to help you take a network marketing deal you?ve already started and make it successful. That?s also another article, and another course. My job is to give you the criteria for selecting a winning company. If you?ve already picked a loser and you?re unwilling to change companies, I can?t help you. If you?re in the process of selecting a new company, you?re reading the right article. If you?re in a winning company, this article and my book should only be a confirmation to you that you made the right choice. Most people come to me trying to rationalize why they selected the company they did. They?re not coming to me for my advice or counsel; they?re coming to me for my approval of their decision so they can feel better about their choice. When I don?t give my blessing, they usually go away incensed.
Seek advice before, not after
Others approach me for my advice after they?ve already selected their company. Even knowing that my services exist, they don?t consult me before joining the program because they?re too afraid of what I might say about their new deal. Isn?t that scary? To be so emotionally attached to a product or business opportunity that you don?t even want to know the truth? Their truth is more important than the truth. They?d rather keep the perfect image of their new company in their minds than have anyone try to poke holes in it. If that?s your strategy, and you?re not willing to change, this article and my book will not help you. I?ve found that the best way to convince someone that they?re in error is to allow them to have their way. Experience is a powerful, and often painful, teacher. It was for me.
