Broth with suet dumplings

It's not traditional Lancashire hotpot but did make a cheaper & entire entree. No potato so I'm guessing it to be an ancient dish from before the potato of the 'new world'. In vain I've looked for the recipe. I appeal (not too loudly) to Rossendale.
T'was made in a cast iron pot on the fire & contained - not in the order of putting in the pot - barley, dried peas, carrots, cabbage, a boiling piece of beef -usually crosscut & last but not least suet dumplings. Seasoning was thyme, salt & pepper all eaten with thin crispy buttered oat cake . There may have other ingredients but that is what I remember from 70'odd years ago.
Someone in knowledgable Rossendale must know although Mrs. Canbitrs, a Yorkshire lass says she's never heard of such rubbish. Say it quietly because Mrs. Canbits makes good flavorful apple pie with cooked but remaining whole slices of apple, crust that melts in the mouth & nicely seasoned with whole cloves. Great with a slice of Wenslydale cheese & I want the delicacy to keep coming.
