NJ doesn't back down on Houston flag honor

Despite vocal opposition from many, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has signed an executive order requiring state buildings to fly U.S. and New Jersey flags at half-staff on Friday to honor New Jersey native Whitney Houston, who died Feb. 11, Philly.com is reporting.

Original reports said the flag would be lowered on Saturday, the day of Houston's funeral, but the order calls for it to happen Friday instead.

The order calls Houston "a gifted singer, remarkable?performer, and iconic figure who left an indelible mark upon the?popular music landscape in the State of New Jersey and across our?nation" and goes on to say the singer "?left a legacy in?this state that will be cherished for many years."

Flags in the state will also fly at half-staff on Feb. 21 to honor Marine Lance Corporal Osbrany Montes De Oca, a N.J. native who died in service in Afghanistan. Much of the criticism Christie received centered on the idea that Houston was being honored in a way that should be reserved for service members.

As the controversy grew, Christie pointed out that he has ordered?flags in the state be flown at half-staff for all 31 of the New Jersey soldiers who have died during his time in office and every fallen police officer during that time.

Governors of American states are authorized by federal law to make this order at their discretion to honor state officials or residents who have died. Nothing requires that the person honored must be a politician or service member; in fact, Christie approved a similar order when Springsteen band member Clarence Clemons died last June.

In msnbc.com's poll on Wednesday asking if Houston should be honored in this way, more than 63,000 readers voted no, while more than 9,000 voted yes.

On Wednesday,?a person commenting on a story on NJ.com said that some state employees will willingly disregard the order. Under the name General Rant, the commenter wrote: "Don't worry, I work at a state building?and trust me, it'll be at the discretion of the management. If you think there'll be full compliance with the order, think again, because there won't."

NEWTON, Mass. (AP) ? Joseph Kennedy III officially launched his campaign for the U.S. House on Thursday, embracing his family's legacy in Massachusetts while also acknowledging that name alone will not assure him electoral success.

"You've got to earn it," Kennedy told reporters after greeting commuters at a train station in Newton, the first of several stops the Democrat planned to make in the reconfigured 4th Congressional District. "You've got to go out every day and talk to people, listen to their concerns, shake more hands, knock on more doors, take more phone calls."

Kennedy, 31, is seeking the seat held by the retiring U.S. Rep. Barney Frank. He released a three-minute video announcement on his website early Thursday before heading out on the tour that also will take him to the largely blue-collar communities of Milford, Attleboro, Taunton and Westport.

The first stop was on largely friendly ground in the upscale Boston suburb. The redheaded son of former U.S. Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy II and grandson of the late Robert F. Kennedy frequently flashed a trademark Kennedy-esque grin as he strode along the train platform and chatted up riders waiting for inbound trolleys to the city.

"We've got a long way to go," he told one man who then remarked that a friend knew one of Kennedy's uncles, a nod to the many personal and political connections Massachusetts voters still have toward the family.

"He's a Kennedy ? no coat," pointed out one older supporter who wore a Kennedy sticker. John F. Kennedy famously doffed his overcoat on a bitterly cold day during inauguration ceremonies in Washington, D.C., in 1961. The late president's great-nephew wore a dark blue suit and tie on a chilly but not unseasonably cold morning more than half a century later.

Kennedy's official announcement was largely a foregone conclusion after he said last month that he was forming an exploratory committee to run for the seat. He later resigned his job as a prosecutor in Middlesex County and moved from Cambridge, outside the 4th district, to Brookline, within the district. He has already been endorsed by two major labor unions and a recent poll showed him with a commanding early lead over Republican Sean Bielat, who lost to Frank two years ago and is running again.

While the Kennedy name remains a powerful force in the state, Republicans are quick to point to U.S. Sen. Scott Brown's surprising victory over Democrat Martha Coakley in the special election that followed U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy's death in 2009.

Edward Kennedy had held the seat for nearly a half century, and John F. Kennedy had held it before his brother. The Republican Brown carried several of the communities in the 4th district in the special election.

"I just think the Kennedy name is not enough to elect somebody," said Mary Thomits, a retired teacher from Brookline who said she "shocked" Kennedy when he introduced himself to her Thursday at a diner near the transit station by telling him that she did not think he was qualified to run.

Thomits, who said she was an independent but planned to vote for Bielat, said she was turned off by the fact that Kennedy was being opportunistic by changing his residence to run in the district. "I think he's just riding on his name," she said.

But Mike Grossman, a 56-year-old Newton resident, said he welcomed Kennedy's candidacy. Though an independent who had voted for Republicans in the past, Grossman said the Kennedy family had a "legacy" that was positive for the state.

Kennedy defended his qualifications for office, pointing to his experience as a volunteer in the Peace Corps, as legal aid attorney and prosecutor as evidence of his concern for the disenfranchised.

"I think I've had an opportunity over the course of my life to see what happens to people who are playing against a stacked deck," he said.

Kennedy said he was proud of his family's long record of public service, but his only specific reference to a family member during his first campaign exchange with reporters came on a question about the current partisan deadlock in Washington. He remarked that Edward Kennedy, while being known as a "liberal lion," was also able to reach across the aisle and forge strong working relationships with Republicans.

"One of his best friends in the Senate was (Utah Republican) Orrin Hatch," he said.

LONDON (AP) ? Dame Judi Dench and Dev Patel brought an Indian adventure to a chilly London with the world premiere Tuesday of their new film, "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel."

The movie, directed by John Madden, sees a group of retirement age Brits move to India to see out their elderly years in colorful Jaipur. Patel, of "Slumdog Millionaire" fame, plays the guy who entices them to take the adventure.

Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy and Penelope Wilton were also among the cast out on the red carpet for the event at the Curzon Mayfair in London.

"I had to ride a motorcycle through the streets of Jaipur with Judi Dench on the back, which was very, very freaky because I have never done it before and my whole thing became 'Don't kill Judi Dench," Nigh joked.

Despite her character's choice to retire, it appears that's the last thing on Dench's mind.

"I am not going to retire hopefully, I am just going to hope that work will come. If I don't do this, I will do something else," she said.

The movie opens in the U.K. and Ireland on Feb. 24.

One of the subjects I discussed with my Eldest Aspie son in the prison visiting room today, was the sad fact that Aspies need peoples. I'm not sure why this is so troubling to admit and I must say it is irritating and somewhat infuriating. Why do we need something, due to our inability to make sound choices and decisions based on our Aspie brains that don't always see the scope of events and the consequences of our actions.
Our ability to reason....is different and often not fully capable of predicting our actions, the plausible reactions of others or outcomes.
It's tough to admit fragility and inadequacy. I was so, like, born alone and fully equipped to live peacefully and successfully on the island of my choice, but no, I must acquiesce and play with the big peoples and its a bitch to admit I need someone else guidance or their advice or thoughts on a matter.
Because I cannot soundly judge the consequences of my own actions....dammit. Seems like such a handicap.
And it's not even that I need one friend or sounding board, no, I need at least two. Yeah, like the challenges of trying to maintain one friendship was not enough. No, there must be more than one.
Having only one trusted friend is what put Eldest in prison. We discussed that and agreed that we need the help and assist of others and we Must fucking open ourselves up and trust and talk and Reveal our selves and who We are so we don't fuck up too badly and end up behind bars.
What a load of pure shit.
I only wish others had a smidgen of an inkling as to the amount of work, effort, sweat and tears that goes into trying to make a single fucking relationship work. Zuckerberg and D'Angelo discuss what "the Facebook thing" should be like.

Zuckerberg: So you know how I'm making that dating site

Zuckerberg: I wonder how similar that is to the Facebook thing

Zuckerberg: Because they're probably going to be released around the same time

HBT: Marlins sell out first game at new stadium, sort of

The Miami Marlins have figured out a way to erase the embarrassment of poor attendance figures: Make fewer tickets available. Brilliant!

The Marlins have announced a sellout for their first game at their new ballpark, a contest against the University of Miami on March 6, reports the Miami Herald.

Of course calling it a sellout is a tad misleading, as the team limited capacity for the game to 10,000. For some reason, there are 15,000 seats available for the Marlins? game against Florida International the next day. That matchup, not surprisingly, has yet to sell out.

To be fair (which takes the fun out of everything!) we?re talking about exhibition games here. Drawing 10,000 for a non-counter against a college team isn?t too shabby.

Smartly, the Marlins have kept the actual capacity of their new stadium on the smallish side ? 37,000 ? so with a pretty exciting team featuring the likes of Jose Reyes, Mike Stanton and Josh Johnson (and Yoenis Cespedes?), the Marlins ought to be able to claim some actual sellouts in 2012, at least during the early part of the season.
