Filipino Catholic population expanding, say Church officials

MANILA, Philippines ? Who said that the number of Filipino Catholics has been dwindling?

The Catholic Directory of the Philippines has said six million more Catholics in the country have been counted so far in 2013, an eight-percent leap from figures culled in 2012.

From 2010 to 2011, the Church counted 70,407,588 Filipino Catholics out of the country?s estimated population of 88.9 million. There were also around 1.21 million Filipinos that were baptized into the Catholic Church, records showed.

This year, the number of Filipino Catholics reached 76.18 million out of the country?s estimated population of 96.8 million. The Catholic Directory also recorded 1.37 million baptisms since 2012.

Data showed the Archdiocese of Cebu had the most number of baptisms so far this year, with 90,036. The Archdiocese of Manila came in second, with 62,854 baptisms, followed by the Diocese of Masbate, with 55,770.

?More people are getting baptized now. Is this a sign of the growth of the Church? Not necessarily. It can be because the population is growing,? said Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz in an interview with reporters.

Cruz said that the figures reflected in the Catholic Directory were culled from parishes across the country.

?Every year, all parishes give a statistical report to the bishop of the diocese, who then adds up all the baptisms, marriages, confirmations, ordinations, among others,? he said, adding that the data is processed by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines before a final report is submitted to Rome.

Another survey conducted in February showed that one in every 11 Filipino Catholics, or 9.2 percent, sometimes considered leaving the Church. The study also showed that Filipino Catholics were less devout and active in attending church services.

Cruz admitted that the Catholic Church didn?t monitor how many of its flock left the fold for other religious denominations. ?We only monitor those that come in [but] to me, the increase in baptisms is a very good sign,? he said.

?It still means that the Church is very much alive here,? said Cruz.

In his opinion column, ?Public Lives,? sociologist Randy David in April highlighted three findings of a survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) in February: ?First, that weekly church attendance has significantly gone down from a high of 64 percent in July 1991 to a low of 37 percent in February 2013.? Second, that only 29 percent of Filipino Catholics consider themselves ?very religious,? compared to 50 percent of Protestants, 43 percent of Iglesia ni Cristo members, and 38 percent of Muslims. And finally, that 9.2 percent (one out of 11) ?sometimes think of leaving the Church.?

Exclusive - Mexico energy reform won't offer private oil concessions-ruling party leader

MEXICO CITY | Sun Aug 11, 2013 11:39pm BST

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A sweeping energy overhaul that Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto is set to unveil on Monday will not offer private firms concessions to tap Mexican oil, but will propose amending the constitution to allow them to invest in the ailing sector, the head of the ruling party told Reuters on Sunday.

The energy overhaul is the cornerstone of a wide-reaching reform package that Pena Nieto hopes will boost economic growth in Latin America's No. 2 economy and lift Mexico's energy sector into the modern era, but is politically divisive.

"In no way is it a privatization. It is opening up the possibility for private capital to join public policies ... without going as far as concessions," said Cesar Camacho, chairman of Pena Nieto's ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).

Leftist parties are against constitutional changes, calling them tantamount to privatizing Mexico's oil wealth controlled by state-owned oil monopoly Pemex.

"It is an audacious reform that includes a constitutional reform, knowing that the constitution and the law should be at the service of the Mexican people," Camacho said.

The bill will offer more generous contracts to oil companies than current service contracts, and open up deep water oil and shale gas reserves, Marco Antonio Bernal, a PRI member who heads the energy commission in the lower chamber of Congress, told Reuters.

Bernal said the government's bill would seek to amend articles 27 and 28 of the constitution to allow greater private-sector participation, but would not detail the new proposed language.

Article 27 bans the government from granting private-sector concessions and production-sharing contracts for oil or gas, making their exploitation the sole preserve of the state. Article 28 defines oil and gas as a strategic sector where the public sector exercises exclusive control.

Oil companies like BP and Exxon Mobil are awaiting details of the language of the proposed constitutional changes, and that of ensuing so-called secondary laws that include the fine print of how to implement the bill, to gauge how far-reaching, and thus lucrative, the reform will be.

Breaking up the 75-year-old state energy monopoly could double foreign investment in Mexico and improve growth, potentially providing the biggest leg-up to its economy since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) two decades ago.

Exports to the United States and Canada tripled and foreign direct investment quadrupled in the decade after Mexico joined NAFTA in 1994. Growth rates rose to 4.8 percent or more in four of the first five years of NAFTA, then faded.

Mexico is the world's 10th-biggest producer of crude oil, according to OPEC data, yet output has fallen by a quarter since hitting a peak of 3.4 million barrels per day in 2004.

The country is a top oil exporter to the United States, but has to import nearly half of its gasoline due to a lack of domestic refining capacity.

POLITICAL TIGHTROPE

By opting against concessions, but allowing private capital to exploit Mexican oil, the government is treading a middle ground between political rivals.

The opposition conservative National Action Party (PAN) has made a more aggressive proposal that allows for oil concessions, while the leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) opposes both constitutional changes and new contracts that share production and risk.

The PRD is shortly set to unveil its own reform proposal, which would keep the constitution unchanged, stick with existing service contracts and call for changing Pemex's tax structure so it could finance operations itself, instead of funnelling profits to the government, PRD Chairman Jesus Zambrano said.

The Mexican government relies on oil revenues to fund about a third of the federal budget. The heavy tax burden has limited Pemex's ability to fund new projects and lift output. The government warns that Mexico could become a net oil importer as early as 2018 if major new oil finds cannot be developed.

The PRD proposal would allow private companies to invest in building pipelines, call for the creation of a stability fund that manages Pemex's oil profits and seek to crackdown on any corruption within Pemex and the powerful oil worker union.

Zambrano, however, distanced himself from former party ally and leftist firebrand Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who was runner-up to Pena Nieto in last year's election.

AMLO, as he is known, has since defected from the PRD, vowing massive protests against any proposed constitutional changes and calling the government's reform plan "the robbery of the century."

"He has chosen his own path, his own strategy, and we have chosen ours," Zambrano told Reuters when asked if the PRD would join in the planned protests.

One top PRD lawmaker said on condition of anonymity that the party would remain within a cross-party pact Pena Nieto has used to push through a series of other reforms, even if the PRI seeks to change the constitution.

That bodes well for the other major element of the reform drive, a fiscal overhaul that seeks to wean the government off its Pemex dependence, crack down on evasion and widen the net to improve the tax take.

Chloe Moretz on Her Wedding DJ duties and Playing Courtney Love

Judging by her upcoming film roles, Chlo? Moretz isn't a teen you'd want to cross. The 16-year-old Cartersville, Georgia-born actress will once again beat the tar out of adult villains as Hit-Girl in?Kick-Ass 2,?out August 16. Then in October, she'll be seeking revenge as the title character in a remake of?Carrie. Thankfully, the real-life Moretz was happy to chat about the music of her life,?sans?telekinetic tomfoolery.?

What is the last song you listened to today?
"You Ain't Alone" by Alabama Shakes. I love them because they have this rad sound without getting too banjo-y and weird. They hit that folkie vibe but with more of an alternative side, like the Black Keys.

What was the last concert you went to?
I saw Rihanna on her?777?tour in London while I was filming?Kick-Ass 2. That tour was doing smaller venues. Seeing her live was so sick, in a smaller place rather than at, like, the Staples Center in L.A. I'll switch up from alternative to R&B to hip-hop, but Rihanna is the queen of my pop world?her and Katy Perry.

Do your parents ever object to anything you're listening to?
My mom gets upset if I listen to music that is degrading to women in any way. So, I like to listen to a lot of rap music and I'll put on something like Juicy J's "Bandz A Make Her Dance" or Chief Keef's "Love Sosa" and she'll be like, "Chloe! Why would you listen to this?" I just tell her I listen to rap because it's fun to dance to.

If you were curating a festival whom would you put on the bill? It could be anyone living or dead.
Definitely Amy Winehouse. Then I'd have the The Black Keys, Santigold, Grouplove, M.I.A., Rihanna, Katy Perry, Diplo or Major Lazer, Iggy Azalea, Brooke Candy, Icona Pop, and then Die Antwoord to round it out. I would want to have it somewhere big and outdoors like Glastonbury, which I haven't been to but really want to go. My mom told me I could go when I was 18, so only two more years!

If you were going to portray a musician in a biopic whom would you choose?
Courtney Love. I love everything that she is. Her life would be fun to portray? how she arrived and her relationship with Kurt. I find her very interesting. I met her once at the after-party for the premiere of?Hugo?and she came up and introduced herself to my cousin visiting from Georgia who was wearing a red dress, just like Courtney was. Courtney said, "I had to come find the other girl here wearing a red dress." It was crazy! I thanked my cousin for wearing that dress!

Who that you've worked with has musical taste most similar to your own?
Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Joe has the best taste in music ever. He made me a huge playlist when we were working on?500 Days of Summer. He got me into every band that was on that soundtrack. I was only listening to pop music at the time and he gave me this alternative education. He showed me all this music that still had hooks but was just a bit weird.

What's the name of a mix or playlist on your phone or iPod?
I was just the DJ for my brother's wedding so I made three different playlists for that. I'm never too creative with the names so there's "Classical" and "Freaky Party" and "Regular Party." "Freaky Party" definitely went over the best. I always make playlists for New Year's Eve parties and stuff, but never for something like this with an older group, so I was worried some of the Trap music wouldn't go over too well, but everyone was down with it!

What is a song you know every single word to?
"Everytime" by Britney Spears. It's so easy to memorize! I've been listening to a lot of Britney recently. I'll go in spurts with her. I'll listen to her everyday for a while, then cool off for a couple months, and then it's back to pretty much Britney all the time. Like right now I'm really into "Outrageous."

Who comes after Rihanna in your iTunes?
It's Rita Ora. And Richard Hawley is before Rihanna. Richard Hawley, Rihanna, and Rita Ora?that's pretty funny. Now those three would be a crazy concert!

Zimmerman ordered bulletproof vest while on bond

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? George Zimmerman ordered a bulletproof vest and an infrared home security device last year while he was out on bond awaiting his murder trial in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin, according to records released Thursday.

The records logged by Seminole County police monitoring Zimmerman during his release show that he checked in with deputies by telephone every two days and that he and his wife, Shellie, moved at least three times last year.

Under the terms of his release on $1 million bond, Zimmerman was required to stay in Seminole County except to visit his attorneys in a neighboring county. He also was required to wear a GPS device, which was monitored by deputies.

Zimmerman was acquitted of any crime last month for fatally shooting the unarmed 17-year-old Martin last year in Sanford, where Zimmerman lived and Martin was visiting.

Deputies were notified about the bulletproof vest and home security device from a sales representative from a police supply business. When asked about them, Zimmerman said he had ordered the items for his protection.

Zimmerman's visit to a sporting goods store also piqued deputies' interest last August. They reviewed the store's security tape to make sure Zimmerman hadn't stepped foot in an area where the store sells firearms.

Credit Card

Stop using your credit card if you cannot pay it off. Pay down the complete monthly balance before you start using your credit card again.

Avoid ATM fees by only using the ATM of your own bank?s ATMs. Financial institutions have heavy monthly and per-transaction fees if you use other ATMs, and those fees can be very expensive.

TIP! You should start saving money for your children?s education as soon as they?re born. If you wait to save, you may not have enough for them to go to college.

Keep all the important tax related documents together in files to access them easily. Keep all your personal documents such as receipts or insurance papers in one file so you can find them easily.

Spend Less

The key to having money is to never spend less than you make. Figure out your total income, and spend less than that.

TIP! While you might not love the job you have, and may be unsatisfied with your salary, a low paying job is better than no job at all. Many people want to quit their jobs and find another one, but be sure to have another job lined up before you do.

As was stated earlier in this article, a great deal of people have difficulties managing their finances. Now that you know a little more about money management, you can change your relationship with money. Use the advice featured in the tips above to help you get a grip on your finances so you can start to enjoy stress free living.

Certainly, there definitely seems to be a large amount of frustration with regards to the ideal inflammation available on the market. Basic research may be the sole answer. You have to take time to undertake the desired investigation to be able to make the correct selection. In today?s current society you?ll find that nearly all studies are accomplished on the web, try not to neglect to ask your family and friends for recommendation. By spending some time designed for adequate research you could very well be convinced you have determined the most efficient Ubiquinol option available for purchase.

2013-08-04_18h47_24You might have missed it, but Lync, Microsoft?s enterprise-focused communications suite brought its parent company $1 billion in revenue during its 2013 fiscal year. That a milestone of that sort could all but slip through the news coverage of Microsoft?s earnings report is almost interesting. The reason for the mild coverage of Lync and its performance is in fact a non-puzzle: One billion dollars in revenue stacked next to Microsoft total fiscal 2013 top line of $77.8 billion isn?t much, and enterprise-facing products from incumbent firms aren?t sexy, thus often getting lost in the press mix. However, the Lync number, when placed next to two other figures helps to draw a picture of Microsoft that details a company in transition. As Windows slips in the face of a sliding personal computing market, hurting OEM revenues for the company, new business products at Microsoft will command increasing internal primacy as its business adapts to current and future market conditions. Or, more simply, the core fiber of Microsoft is changing. Microsoft estimated that the larger PC market contracted by 9% during its fiscal year, stating that declines in its revenue relating to sales to OEM partners was due to ?the impact on revenue of the decline in the x86 PC market.? That?s correct, Microsoft. A few numbers: Azure, Microsoft?s cloud computing product, recorded $1 billion in revenue over the past 12 months, it was reported in April; Office 365 is currently generating revenue at a run rate of $1.5 billion per year at the end of Microsoft?s fiscal fourth quarter, up 50% from the number quoted at the end of the company?s fiscal third quarter; Lync grew 30% in the fiscal fourth quarter, and brought in $1 billion in revenue for the fiscal year. These are numbers that Microsoft is proud of, not because in terms of relative scale they are tectonically impressive – the Windows division’s fiscal fourth quarter revenue alone totaled $4.4 billion – but more that the represent the fact that it has business units in the pipe that can replace other incomes that are aging; Microsoft can, therefore, at least in theory, continue revenue growth even as its core Windows operations atrophies during the opening chapters of the post-PC era. Office 365?s $500 million yearly run rate change in a single quarter is impressive, but Lync?s most recent quarters detail that it too can put points on the

First Red Dragon footage shown from 6K source, boasts three more stops DR video

After a considerable delay from its slated late 2012 release date, the 6K Red Dragon sensor is finally ready -- and it seems to have been worth the wait. The first test footage (after the break) has come from cinematographer and Red booster Mark Toia, who stress-tested it in difficult conditions like high contrast daylight and dark night scenes. Afterwards, he said the camera has three more f-stops of dynamic range than the MX-equipped Epic and thinks the new sensor brings the "best highlight falloff I've ever seen from any digital camera," including Sony's $65,000 CineAlta F65 4K model. Though Red put on a show of upgrading Epic and Epic-X cameras with Dragon earlier this spring, the company recently said that deliveries would start in September. Meanwhile, Dragon equipped cameras are in the hands of other notable DPs and directors too, like Peter Jackson, Michael Bay and Darius Woski -- meaning you can likely expect a deluge of Dragon eye-candy over the coming weeks.

New ant species! Scientists uncover treasure trove...of ants!

New ant species: Researchers working in Central America and the Carribbean have discovered 33 previously unknown ant species.?

By Douglas Main,?LiveScience Staff Writer / August 1, 2013

This photo shows the magnified monster-like face of the ant Eurhopalothrix zipacna, named after Zipacna, a vicious, crocodile-like demon of Mayan mythology. It's found in the mountains of Guatemala and Honduras.

John T. Longino, University of Utah

A total of 33 previously unknown ant species have been discovered in Central America and the Caribbean. The nearly blind ants live in leaf litter and rotten logs in rainforests and are all quite tiny, each less than one-twelfth of an inch (2 millimeters) in length, according to new research. ?

Scientists named about one-third of the ants after Mayan deities, said Jack Longino, an entomologist at the University of Utah, in a statement from the school.

"The new species were found mostly in small patches of forest that remain in a largely agricultural landscape, highlighting the importance of forest conservation efforts in Central America," Longino said. These crawling, chomping mini-beasts perform many vital roles in ecosystems, such as aerating soil and pollinating plants.

When viewed under a microscope, they are the "stuff of nightmares," Longino added. "Their faces are broad shields, the eyes reduced to tiny points at the edges and the fierce jaws bristling with sharp teeth. They look a little like the monster in 'Alien.'"

One of the?newfound species,?Eurhopalothrix zipacna, is named for a violent, crocodile-like Mayan demon, and is found in Guatemala and Honduras. Another, dubbed?Eurhopalothrix xibalba, or "place of fear," refers to the Mayan underworld; this ant is found from Honduras to Costa Rica.

Scientists have so far recorded about 15,000?species of antsworldwide, according to the statement. But there may be as many as 100,000 in total, said Longino, who has now discovered 131 new species of ants, the statement noted.?Insects in the tropics?have astonishing levels of diversity, studies have shown.

About half of the new ants were described in a paper co-authored by Longino and published July 29 in the journal Zootaxa. The rest are detailed in a paper to be published shortly in the same journal. The ants detailed in the present study come from the genus?Eurhopalothrix, known for the club-shaped hairs on their bodies. The latter insects in the forthcoming paper hail from the genus?Octostruma, which means "eight swellings," referring to the ants' eight-segmented antennas, according to the release.

The Will to Survive: The New World's Order

1. America. If you are previously from some where else, or crossing the border from a nearby country, you're all good, but I would like for the majority of it to take place in America.

2. The NDO is basically the backstory, and what has pushed the few survivors apart from eachother, but will now be the uniting force. They add a second enemy other than the walkers, so while you're hiding from them, you also need to be sure to be careful not to get caught, because now survivors are targets to be killed.

Great questions. I hope I cleared things up?

Driver injures 12 at LA beach boardwalk, flees

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A driver plowed into a crowd walking along one of the most popular beach boardwalks in Southern California early Saturday evening, injuring 12 people, two of them critically, before fleeing, officials said.

The sandy-haired man drove the powerful midsized Dodge Avenger into vendors and tourists as they walked along the paved pedestrian walkway of the Venice Beach boardwalk, leaving behind a scene strewn with bleeding victims, mannequins, knocked over lawn chairs, and chaos as he drove away, police and witnesses said.

He had yet to be taken into custody more than three hours later, police said.

Ten of the 12 injured were taken to hospitals, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said. Two of them were in critical condition and two more in serious condition, Humphrey said.

Witnesses told firefighters it appeared the man was in control of his car as he ran people down, but police said they did not know his motives.

"If this was an intentional act that certainly raises the stakes quite a bit," Los Angeles police Lt. Andy Neiman said.

Alex Hagan, 22, who was working the front desk at the Cadillac Hotel, said the man was sitting in his parked car on the street right next to the boardwalk and his hotel when he suddenly started the engine and accelerated, swerving past yellow poles meant to keep cars off the pedestrian walkway.

"I heard a big 'boom, boom,' like the sound of someone going up and down the curb, it was super loud," Hagan told The Associated Press."

The car knocked down two mannequins then ran into vendors selling at their booths, Hagan said.

Many rushed to help the injured while others ran after the car screaming and cursing, Hagan said.

Firefighters surveyed the sprawling crowd looking for injured immediately after the crash, Humphrey said. Hours later police surveyed the same ground for evidence.

The Venice boardwalk is a cultural hub in a part of Los Angeles known for its circus-meets-gritty-city eccentricities.

The 1.5-mile ribbon of asphalt that runs along the sand a few hundred yards from the ocean is home to galleries, restaurants, tattoo shops, skateboard parks and the famous outdoor weight room known as Muscle Beach.

It can draw as many as 150,000 people on summer weekends.
